About this deal

Two unnamed Elves are also provided, featuring the same dual-moulded hair elements, in dark brown and blonde. His original's slightly more rumpled look and determined expression, too, feel more authentic to me; although I guess since those are a product of his and Frodo's journey to Mordor, it makes sense that he doesn't display them yet in this earlier scene. Some LEGO® sets contain small parts that are NOT suitable for and may pose a hazard to children under 3 years of age.

LEGO Icons 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell review

Next up we have the “warriors”, Gimli son of Gloin, Aragorn II Elessar, Boromir and Legolas Greenleaf, representing the races of Dwarves, Men and Elves. Sting is another of the weapons in the pack with Aragorn and Boromir's swords, featuring a textured grip and therefore improving upon the accessory produced in 2012. The roof, while interesting from a LEGO perspective, is too great a departure from its onscreen appearance and far too visually dominant. I see this set at the top of the big map, Gondor below that, Barad-Dur on the far right, and Orthanc, which looks like a chess room, in the middle.

The two Dwarves include medium legs, which are ideal, since these characters stand between the heights of Men and Hobbits in the films. Furthermore, the trees provide a nice backdrop for the scene, closely resembling examples from 21338 A-Frame Cabin. I’m even getting to a point that I’m losing interest in Lego since it looks like all needs to be bigger!

However, I think tan would have been more suitable for Legolas' hair than blonde and maybe this Elf should have included unique hair, which could accommodate his quiver. Elrond, the Lord of Rivendell, convenes the council and his elegant robes capture outstanding detail. Also, as someone mentioned, it will be a pain to align the tiles on the roof AND the moulding marks… (+ the LEGO marks on studs… my OCD knows no boundaries). It is shaping up to be yet another great year for LEGO, at least based on my own cash outflow projections. Older structures are therefore intermingled with new and I imagine this stone tower is much older than its surroundings.

Colourful models are commonly accentuated by the dark 18+ packaging and Rivendell certainly looks appealing. The ground floor is luxuriously adorned with 69 printed tiles, matching those from the courtyard outside. On the other hand, I much prefer the older versions of Aragorn, Arwen and (aside from the legs) Sam. The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell will be released on 5 March 2023 via LEGO VIP Early Access, ahead of a general release of 8 March 2023 and will be available exclusively from LEGO.

Here’s a look at the instructions for 10316 Lord of the Rings Rivendell, which appear in the new stark white format. It’s great to get an older version of Bilbo, who is now ageing normally after having surrendered the Ring. Their aqua colour choice is unexpected, but the cupcake cases partner with aqua 1x1 bricks at the base of each column. Two stickered paintings are mounted above the statue, taking inspiration from murals created by renowned Tolkien illustrator, Alan Lee. Where Lion's Castle provide perfect view in every angle (when closed), this one is not and that's what's bugging me the most. Too big to fit anywhere and too expensive to ever make it mine, but it is definitely the best LEGO set in quite a while.
