Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher held her office from 1979—1990 and made significant changes to the future of British politics. Within the main shopping area in Hailsham, as indicated in the Hailsham & Hellingly Masterplan, [29] the Council aims to improve the quality of shopping facilities. One of Kathy’s best friends. Unlike Kathy, she is temperamental and covers up her insecurities through charisma. At Hailsham, she pretends to have special privileges over other students. Tommy In Part Two, the three friends are now in their last year at Hailsham. They move into the Cottages, where they prepare for their training as carers and donors. With the older Cottage students, Chrissie and Rodney, the five students take a weekend trip to Norfolk. While the organ donation system and the “special” nature of the Hailsham characters seem distant, Ishiguro draws many parallels to the human injustices from our own world — many of which seemed like a widely recognised fact of life. Thatcherism and 1990s England

The Old Vicarage – Now "The Grange", the Old Vicarage was built 1701-1705 for the Reverend Thomas Hooper as a vicarage for the adjacent church. The architectural style of the house exemplifies what many refer to as the Mary-Anne style which reflect the Dutch domesticity of the William and Mary period, combined with the more grand and formal style of the Queen Anne period, is an early 18th-century residence and a Grade II listed building. Although the character of Miss Emily reminds the reader with the idea that Hailsham was meant to be a ‘humane’ method for rearing the clones; a truly paradoxical and oxymoronic phenomenon. Although at the termination of the novel, Hailsham wishes to prove that as a specie, the clones are ‘as sensitive and intelligent as any ordinary human’. Kerr, Sarah (17 April 2005). " 'Never Let Me Go': When They Were Orphans". New York Times. New York . Retrieved 14 March 2011. Tommy has a new theory about deferring their careers as donors: if two Hailsham students were in love, and could prove it through their artwork, they could delay their donations by three or four years. He begins drawing imaginary animals in hope of the deferral theory. Ruth tells Kathy that she knows Kathy is in love with Tommy, but that he will never return her feelings. Part Three Obscurity vs. Transparency: How Miss Emily and Miss Lucy Approach Knowledge of the Students' Future

Growing up at Hailsham, the students' best artwork was taken away to a mysterious "Gallery" off campus. We later learn that the Gallery was created by a group of activists, including Madame, to demonstrate to the public that the clones are human beings with souls and thus should not have their organs harvested. guardian In Chapter 22, Miss Emily reveals the obvious, stating that the guardians lied to the clones when they were children: The shield is divided into four sectors. [44] The upper left of these shows the six gold martlets and crown of the armorial bearings of the County of East Sussex. The remaining three quadrants each depict a facet of the town's history or culture.Part One focuses on Kathy’s childhood and schooling at Hailsham. Hailsham appears, at first, like any normal British boarding school with large grounds, playing fields and, more importantly at Hailsham, art classes. Tommy, knowing that his next donation will end his life, confronts Kathy about her work as a carer. Kathy resigns as Tommy's carer but still visits him. The novel ends after Tommy's "completion", and Kathy drives up to Norfolk and briefly fantasizes about everything she remembers and everything she lost. It is ideally situated for ease of access to many of the larger towns of Sussex and the south coast, with their more extensive shopping centres and entertainment facilities, being centrally located within the Eastbourne / Hastings / Tunbridge Wells triangle. It is also within easy reach of airports, Channel ferry terminals, the Channel Tunnel and London. During the trip, Kathy and Tommy separate from the others and look for a copy of a music cassette tape that Kathy had lost when at Hailsham. Tommy's recollection of the tape and desire to find it for her make clear the depth of his feelings for Kathy. They find the tape of Songs After Dark by Judy Bridgewater, and Tommy shares with Kathy a theory that the reason Madame collected their art was to determine which couples were truly in love and cites a teacher who had said that their art revealed their souls. After the trip, Kathy and Tommy do not tell Ruth of the found tape or of Tommy's theory about the deferral. Hailsham is actually one of the oldest places on the south coast - the town was settled long before the Romans landed on the shores of Sussex and Kent in the 1st Century.
