About this deal

He was a son of the English publisher Henry Vizetelly, by his first marriage to Ellen Elizabeth Pollard. Thus, supposedly thereafter, every time something terrible was about to happen, the Red Man reputedly appeared to the inhabitants of the Tuileries.

The story of the little red man became not a story of Napoleon’s individual genius, but rather the genius of a place – a l ieux de memoire, as Pierre Nora has put it – and the genius of the tragic, contingent history of those whose heads have borne the crown and who have thus been separated in their fate from ordinary men and women. There is a legend that tells of ' Le Petit Homme Rouge', the Little Red Man that haunted the Tuileries palace for over 300 years, between about 1570 when it was built to 1871 when it was burnt down by the Paris Commune. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details. It is unclear how closely connected this is to the idea of the “little red man,” since obviously the figure is not little nor, in the German portrayal at least, is he red. We pay respect to the Elders past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.

History is distinct from myth, folktale, or legend, almost in the same way that, say, Galileo’s understanding of the universe is distinct from the Church of his day. Moreover, the idea of a Red Man did not really gain traction until Auguste Jean-Baptiste Defauconpret published Mémoires et anecdotes sur la cour de Napoléon.While making his accustomed round one night, lantern in hand, through the silent galleries, he observed in the Galerie d’Apollon a human form standing against a window, with crossed arms and drooping head, in an attitude of profound affliction. Henry IV, Louis XVI, and Marie Antoinette were not the only royal inhabitants to receive a visit from the Red Man. Rarely discussed outside of France, this is the strange tale that is supported by accounts from 3 high ranking members from within Napoleon's inner circle, all referencing a figure known as “The Red Spectre” or "Petit Homme Rouge" - Want to know more ? Because there are so many and they are so rich, I will do this in a few different entries starting with one of the most commonly told stories involving Napoleon – the story of the Little Red Man.He was let in and their conversation was overhead with the Red Man reputedly saying, “This is my third appearance before you. The wikipedia article has noted that this is “very recent” and mysteriously dropped hints about a bandit who went by that nickname in the early 1800s as perhaps the origin of the story. Meanwhile, another angle of the story seems to have been added in 1831 with a book written by the soothsayer, supposed intimate of Empress Josephine, and inventor of the modern Tarot deck, Mademoiselle Lenormand (whom I will discuss in a later entry) with Petit Homme Rouge au Chateau de Versailles. He never speaks, nor are his visits of much length; he vanishes soon after his presence is discovered.

To emphasize, both of these are pretty explicit that the red man is the devil, and it is hard to think of picturing one’s enemy as in league with the devil as particularly novel. That was the last time the Red Man was seen because on 23 May 1871, the Tuileries palace was swathed in petroleum, liquid tar, and turpentine. He again appeared before the child Louis XIV during the Fronde and before Louis XVI the morning of the flight to Varennes. Paul Sebillot, in a scholarly article in an 1889 édition of Revue des Traditions populaires, recounted much of the story as it now appears today.
