About this deal

The endearing inhabitants of Bruncliffe are back, banding together with good old Yorkshire grit, this time to foil an organised crime gang who, improbably, are running a drugs/people trafficking ring out of a bunch of old farm sheds. Trying not to keep secrets from Delilah he has taken Delilah to Skipton with him - and she is sitting not with Samson but in the same pub. The story unfolds at pace, and by the end we have had to change what we thought we knew about who were the good guys and who the bad.

Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). It feels like a warm bath and coming home, but also quite a dark, intriguing mystery that seamlessly blends in cases like missing buckets and stoles laundry with some serious harrowing storylines. It will be interesting to see the TV series if/when that happens, but make sure you read the books first if you can. Just as animals can be imprinted by humans if they spend too long with them, so I became imprinted with this amazing part of the world. Personally, I thought the pacing could have been a bit quicker - I found myself getting frustrated by knowing more than our heroes at some parts. We know that Pete Ferris had tried to blackmail Rick Procter - hence Bernard Taylor's holdhall of cash - and been killed, but disguised as suicide. Taken out for a walk in the torrential rain by Arty and Joseph, Tolpuddle finds Rick's car parked at Fellside, and catches Delilah's scent.

Joseph now lives at Fellside Hall, an "old folk's home," with good friends Arty Robinson, Eric, Edith Hird and her sister Clarissa. The whole series has a televisual quality and I can’t wait for the French dramatised version of the stories to hit the Saturday night BBC4 schedules. I have a confession to make before I start this review – I love Bruncliffe and all its inhabitants, I was itching to get back to the town. All the previously laid threads meet here and many are neatly tied up, although there's one more book (at least), so obviously not all of them. However, in this case I found myself fairly lost given what was clearly extensive character backstories and plot lines that appear to have been carried over from previous books. Stagg has also written a few novels that were set in the French Pyrenees but is now writing crime fiction under her other pen name. and murder, has become a go to for me for reading slump rescue recommendations, reading clubs, and just getting out of the doldrums in general, and this was to be a culmination of so many different story threads, and Julia Chapman did it! Lucy has a son Nathan who went missing in the previous book, but was rescued by Samson and the local poacher Pete Ferris.

The reader knows who it is as the novel is told from various points of view, but they don’t know the lengths he will go to or why. J'aime d'amour les personnages, que ce soit Samson et Delilah qui font vibrer mon coeur ou tous les perso secondaires qui sont follement attachants. This is book 6 in what is turning out to be a very good series with strong characters, a good blend of main plots and smaller ones, and above all a compelling personal lives story. It doesn’t help that both his detective agency and Delilah’s business are lettered the same, ‘DDA’ and in the same building! The other main plot is the ongoing false corruption case against Samson orchestrated with the help of corrupt police officers. Needing something to do to take his mind off all the emerging complexities of the case, Jimmy goes out to split and divide the rhubarb, but finds something buried there.
