Description

The Workout icon allows you to create a workout based on distance or time, calorie consumption, heart rate or power zones. Again, like the Surprise Me function this adds a more novice-friendly approach to training than the likes of Stages, Garmin or Wahoo. Wireless ANT+ and bluetooth heart rate monitor and wheel and cadence sensor (all 505HC models only)

The Cyclo 505 features a simple menu structure and easy-to-use on-screen buttons. Plus, what's more, the 505 device is waterproof to IPX7 standards. It also features a Barometric altimeter and electronic compass assisting you with changing weather conditions. New features available with New software update The unit itself is big (dwarfing even Garmin’s Edge 1030) and it closely resembles a smartphone, which also makes it easy to read. The downside is that the bulky unit takes up plenty of space and the rather tall mount can get a little wobbly when riding over rougher ground. The Cyclo 505 includes bicycle maps allowing you to travel between point A and B or cycle along your preferred route. You can also use the 505 in a car and receive turn by turn directions to your selected bike route. Optional accessores are available including a car charger and car mount. You can also see the elevation details along your route. Furthermore the battery life on this Mio sat nav is 12 hours so you can cycle without concern for running out of battery power. More obvious, and potentially very useful, is the POI tile. Here you can see nearby locations in useful categories – emergency, bike store or food and drink – and it's pretty accurate. Handy in a pinch. The 405 uses its preloaded maps from OpenStreetMap, which impressively contains the whole of Europe (if you buy and use a unit in Europe that is). Once it’s found a sensor, it will immediately give you the opportunity to rename it. This is a great user-friendly touch and indicative of how well-thought-out the 405’s user interface is. There’s a stem mount, the device and a micro USB charing and data transfer cable. That’s it. Oh. Bits of paper too.

The Cyclo 505 supports bluetooth and ANT+ heart rate monitor and bluetooth and ANT+ speed-cadence sensors. Plus it also allows connection to ANT+ trainers. Additionally connection to the Shimano Di2 unit (required) allows the user to see gear info during ride and all gear info is saved in history and a GPX file. I found even pairing the Cyclo with my own phone slightly faffy, as it looks simple but seems to involve codes and poking various parts of both screens at just the right time. It took a few goes, with me wondering if it was working or not. Once successfully done, at least, it connects automatically (and rapidly) from then on. Resolutely routey Let’s face it, you’ve probablky got no idea how big a 505HC is ! So I will compare to a few other bike computers And at the end there is a rubber-covered USB port and a memory card port. I’ve absolutely no idea why you would need to use a memory card as a full regional map is included. The walking feature doesn’t work quite so well. Combining this with the ‘surprise me’ feature caused our Mio Cyclo210 to freeze, and when we finally managed to get it to work it still seemed to take us down some major roads, even after telling it to avoid them. It’s not really made for walking, though, and there are better systems available if you want a walking GPS.

Having to keep getting the laptop out and connect the Mio by cable is a bit of a faff. Uploading the rides to Mioshare is easy enough, though, and you can connect your account to Strava so it takes your rides across. Value and competition

Hardware

There is quite a bit of competition at this price point from the likes of Lezyne, Wahoo and, of course, Garmin. The main thing I like about my Garmin 810 is that it has Bluetooth to connect to my phone, so that as soon as the ride is saved it uploads automatically to the Garmin Connect and Strava apps.
