About this deal

We are all very excited about this new programme and where the approach has been trialled children have enjoyed the experience. We found that the teachers on the course were much more able to pick out Goldilocks words than we SLTs were, as they had a much better knowledge of the average student, but with a little practice I was pretty confident with this concept. The Word Aware approach provides a structuredframework to promote vocabulary development in all children and has been rigorously tried and tested. It is an essential resource for teaching assistants and learning support assistants and will also save time for special educational needs co-ordinators (SENCOs) and speech and language therapists (SaLTs) who are keen to establish effective vocabulary interventions. This rigorously tried and tested approach is an outstanding resource that will be an essential addition to any early years' setting or preschool classroom.

The use of STAR Topic to develop subject-specific vocabulary, the development of word detective strategies and using Word Aware in small groups with children who have extremely limited language are all possible developments.The approach is about making words a priority and there are some lovely ideas throughout of how to do this in school without it taking loads of extra time and planning. Vocabulary is important from Early Years right through to secondary / high schooling as a result of the vast explosion of topic specific information.

Stephen graduated in Speech Pathology from Flinders University, before attaining an MSc in Speech and Language Therapy from City University in 2000. It’s a good way of choosing the best words to focus on and having a manageable and useful list to focus on. For many children, particularly those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) or those whose home language isn’t English (ELL or EAL learners), the vocabulary of the classroom can be a barrier to learning. These words then need to be reviewed (repeated) by the class in both their writing or their spoken language (both needed in the right context).
