Escalation doesn't have the epic boss encounters of Gears of War's Horde mode, the alternate objectives of Mass Effect 3, or the insane extraction endings of Plants vs.Fall of Cybertron carried us through the titular Death Star-esque planet’s final days – a story seldom told in the universe, and real riveting exposition for fans. There’s an attempt here to please both old hands and newcomers – with the franchise’s classic universe clashing with its new one – but it merely results in an incoherent rollercoaster ride that possesses no real direction. With its gibberish plot and repetitive, unfulfilling combat, this regrettable little mistake serves only as a prime example of what happens when publishers miss the point of their own products and milk the teat dry. In the end, Dark Spark succumbs to the pressure, even if it does put up one hell of a fight to stay above the average bar it has so easily slunk into. Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark is a dud on both of those fronts, and it throws in a confusing story to boot.

The positive moments are few and far between – with even fan favourite Grimlock failing to make the release feel worthwhile.Each of these characters play an integral role in the adventure, among other familiar faces that will be popping up. While the 14 mission campaign only gives you access to around 13 characters, you can unlock the others through Gear Boxes for use in the online Escalation mode. Oh, and have I mentioned that all these guys are giant robots from space that can change form into cars and planes? With up to three other players online (the matchmaking is fairly smooth), you can fight off waves of enemies to your heart’s content, unlocking more characters and such in a more fun way. This is mainly due to the fact that you eventually start to get the same unlocks from the same boxes, with the random structure of these rewarding cases meaning that you could get 4 IronHides or 10 Neutron Assault Rifles.
