Why was she wearing the jacket that had been previously been stolen by a murderer off her during a previous case years ago? The brilliant plotting of Herron’s twice CWA Dagger Award-winning Slough House series of spy novels is matched only by his storytelling gift and an ear for viciously funny political satire. Love Heron’s London, his wit, capability with language and how skillfully characters and plots are crafted. Herron’s remarkable novel has enough suspense, action, and deductive dazzlement to keep genre fans happy. This was then broadened in scope though, as he began to feel more and more comfortable and confident with the genre. The question as to whether it really is her or not remains open though, as Zoe never seemed like the sort of person that would commit suicide. Action, espionage, and mystery are what you should expect from this series, and that’s precisely what you’d get. Does the Service have a retirement home for those who know too many secrets but don’t remember they’re secret? That’s why the Slough House denizens, from Jackson Lamb to Roddy Ho to newcomer Ashley Kahn, maintain pathos in the face of parody—they may be bitter, but they have pride in themselves and their work. After years spent as the bottom, the slow horses suddenly find themselves caught in the midst of a conspiracy that threatens the future of MI5.But it is not the action, or even the tradecraft, that will reassure Herron readers that they are on secure ground with The Secret Hours, his 16th novel across 20 years. Herron's short stories have been regularly published in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine and some are collected in the book All the Livelong Day, published in 2013. The story follows the lives of the agents who are in the Slough House and how eager they are to prove their worth. His writing style is very different, with a unique mix of suspense, meandering reveals, and a hint of humor to add more flavor. When one of their own is kidnapped and held for ransom, the agents of Slough House must defeat the odds, overturning all expectations of their competence, to breach the top-notch security of MI5’s intelligence headquarters, Regent’s Park, and steal valuable intel in exchange for their comrade’s safety. The book gets fascinating as it shows the struggle of this dysfunctional team trying to execute the mission successfully. He’s overweight, frequently drunk and appears dishevelled, but many enemies make the mistake of underestimating him.

Death has revealed that the deceased had been keeping a secret second bank account—and there’s only ever one reason a spy has a secret second bank account. With his degree being in English as well, he was able to provide his material with a much needed sense of grounding that would also help to inform much of his ongoing narratives too.

Maybe the politicos are a bit on the nose and readers would have grasped that events are taking place in the present day without needing asides about kale smoothies and Wordle. With his down-to-earth sensibilities and easy going nature that shines through on the page, his career as a successful author was to be a lucrative one.

More than that, he composes—at the rate of a pulpist—the kind of efficient, darkly witty, tipped-with-imagery sentences that feel purpose-built to perforate my private daze of illiteracy. But with experience, he understood how to create the perfect crime thriller that people would love to read.
