About this deal

The accompanying text makes clear the stakes involved to get such rare images; too often paid with the lives of amazing humans in their primes For all of these reasons and more, I am content to experience these adventures vicariously through the lens of Chin’s camera; but I am at the same time inspired to see my surrounding landscape as vistas of my personal lived experience and appreciate them all the more. As a full-service speaker booking agency, we have access to virtually any speaker or celebrity in the world. Chin is also an artist and his work documents expeditions and climbs from the Sahara to the Himalayas. It also taught me an important lesson: if you turn around and come home alive, you made the right decision. Jimmy, Chai, and their two children split their time between New York City and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

years old, it really shifted significantly for me in that I just want to hang out with her and my son all the time. Reinforces the impression I’ve long had of Chin being a genuinely decent human being in addition to all his technical talents. This is a deeply personal collection of some of my favorite and most meaningful moments, photos and stories from the last twenty years.Jimmy Chin is one of the most widely traveled and experienced adventure photographers on Earth, and this collection is an absolute tour de force. My favourite is one that was given to me on a National Geographic trek across the Changtang Plateau in Tibet. As Chin’s creative energy gravitates towards big-time screenings, it’s hard to imagine this collection won’t be his photographic magnum opus. They were prompt in their responses, and were incredibly helpful with all of my questions and concerns.

This book was written with a lot of insight into how decisions are made – and how catastrophic decisions are made inadvertently.

There and Back draws from his breathtaking portfolio of photographs, captured over twenty years during cutting-edge expeditions on all seven continents—from skiing Mount Everest, to an unsupported traverse of Tibet's Chang Tang Plateau on foot, to first ascents in Chad’s Ennedi Desert and Antarctica’s Queen Maud Land. They jump into these dark, muddy caves, they've really put their lives on the line to do the right thing. Moreover, he joined a National Geographic expedition to make an unsupported crossing of the remote Chang Tang Plateau in Tibet with Galen Rowell, Rick Ridgeway, and Conrad Anker in 2002. FREE SOLO is both an edge-of-your seat thriller and an inspiring portrait of an athlete who exceeded our current understanding of human physical and mental potential.

Now, decades later, my two most coveted possessions are a signed Bradford Washburn photograph and a framed mid-1930s series of panoramic landscape images. However, they are a mix of awesome mountain and climbing photos and photo essay shots of expeditions. On a personal note, I’d like to confess that I read this today while squirreled up at home, inside on a gorgeous New Mexico bluebird day, because it was “too cold”—twenties—to spend the day climbing. Jimmy Chin is a well-known American professional mountain athlete, photographer, film director, and author. He tried the same climb in 2008 but was forced to turn around 100m from the summit, and his film of the climb, Meru, was released in theaters in 2015.

Being introduced to Jimmy Chin through his filmmaking was powerful enough… but this collection of photos showcases Chin’s ability to do what we all wish we could. I found it interesting that Jimmy tries to get the scale of the location while also catching the (small) human’s attempting to conquer the heights. The photographs Chin captured appeared on a number of outdoor company catalogs and, as Chin says, “All of a sudden, I was in. This was a shot that I don’t think anyone had ever snapped before and it represents the intersection of my life as a documentarian and also a climber. As a photographer, Chin's work has been featured in National Geographic Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Outside Magazine and others.
