About this deal

Escape the Dark Sector is a simple sci-fi adventure game with a focus on atmosphere, storytelling, and player cooperation. Each player must now choose one crewmember and one cybernetic, placing these cards in front of them, and taking the crew die bearing their crewmember’s name. If you are the one who turns over a card, this represents that your member of the crew is personally leading the group into the unknown. The straight-forward dice mechanics, combined with the rules details on the mission cards and limited character actions means that you can focus on the action and emerging story.

Combat is the only complex mechanic in the game and players get a choice between ranged and melee combat, unless a mission card forces them into a specific style. But it doesn’t stop the illustration of a space prison guard dropping a cigarette from their gawping mouth feel any less charming in an old-school kind of way. When drawing any number of item cards, place them face up in a temporary item pool where all players can see them. At the start of the game, the players assemble the chapter deck, with 1 boss card, 4 of each of the act cards (3 different difficulties), and 1 start card.Even though it makes many improvements on its predecessor, Dark Sector is not a revolutionary board game. One issue though is that the rules might come across wrong when players read them for the first time. In ranged, players expend ammo dice from weapon items, along with rolling a hit dice to see if they take damage back.

When playing multiple times, it was often difficult to tell if we had already used that same card before. It can also be a bit jarring as one moment you are raiding a mutant inhabited shanty town and then you are on a desert island looking for pirate gold. After the Flank Round, begin a normal round of combat with all crewmembers taking actions as usual, including the crewmember who acted in the Flank Round. All actions are explained in detail in the following pages, and they are listed on a reminder card in the box which you may find useful to refer to as you read this section. This means the drone remains available for use the following round by any crewmember, and for either its Basic or Advanced function.I got the Kickstarter during 2020 and have only recently had the chance to get it to the table enough to pass judgement. There are still chapter cards that allow players to make narrative decisions that can lead to negative and positive consequences - more so than Dark Sector, with even greater outcomes.
