The UHD Blu-ray was reviewed on a Samsung UE55KS8000 Ultra HD TV and a Samsung UBD-K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Simply put, this is a stunning 4K image – perhaps not quite reference quality as compared to the very best 4K imagery (captured at even higher 6K or 8K resolution), but certainly it’s reference quality for this film. To that point, one of the primary quibbles with HDR10 has been the "set it and forget it" variable when it comes to color, contrast, and black levels.

With decades of expectations stacked against it in addition to mypersonal bias,somehow Blade Runner 2049 emerged as an incredible sequel that not only proves its worth but expands and builds upon the foundations its predecessor. To find the truth, K must seek out assistance from a former Blade Runner known as Deckard (Harrison Ford) who has been missing for over thirty years. Whether it's K's spinner, voices or Los Angeles' environment (it rains a lot), the height channels have weight and presence. Blade Runner 101 (HD, 11:22) This is a collection of six short featurettes that can be watched using a ‘play all’ feature and look at the film's invented world, the design aspects and how they relate to the original film. Fine detail is excellent, whether it's the track conveying the crunch of footsteps on snow or the noise Joi makes when she transitions.If he can solve it, it might be the key to unlocking his own memories – memories he’s long believed to be implanted, but which might actually be real. Scott's films of late feel like they suffer from Intellectual ADD, one interesting idea pops up without being fully explored before jumping to another interesting idea before being dropped altogether and outright forgotten.

Bigger in scope, with more to grapple with and discern, it's a long watch but it's hard to take your eyes off it. It's a beautiful image and doesn't come packed in with compression issues or data fluctuations that can arise from streaming. I don't know if Blade Runner 2049 will be the film that nails it for him, but he plays with color, light, and shadow to create a world that is both beautiful and horrifying. As clean as dialogue is, there are long stretches of silence where no one is talking and all you're left with is atmosphere.Blacks are immense, both firm and inky deep with Deakins sculpting the film with light and shadows (silhouettes are incredibly refined). Robin Wright's Lieutenant Joshi spends most of her time speechifying, while Jared Leto's narcissistic Niander Wallace prattles on about Mankind's destiny. It's exciting to watch Gosling handle the material when K starts to doubt everything he's been told and begins to believe he's made for more. Detail is pin-sharp, revelling in the visually opulent universe that's been created here, soaking up the increasing levels of battle damage that Gosling's K takes across the runtime, and taking in the lines on Ford's veteran's visage, whilst playing with the holo-glitching perfection of Joi. It's a cleaner, slicker and richer looking image, the 4K Blu-ray allowing the film to showcase its sumptuous aesthetics.

That led to a sequel being developed, with Denis Villeneuve in the director's chair and Ryan Gosling in the central role. The extras are all on the included Blu-ray disc and are decent enough, with the promotional shorts and various production featurettes. K (Ryan Gosling) is a Blade Runner, an assassin assigned with tracking down and retiring late model Replicants who weren't pre-programmed with a built-in lifespan. The bass channel provides a heavy foundation for the mix, while the height channels fill in overhead constantly with cues both subtle and lively.

That palette is often quite bleak, which makes Deakins’ artful use of coloring all the more striking when it appears, such as in the film’s Las Vegas sequences.
