The comic’s director of mischief Mike Stirling said: “As Beano celebrates its 85th anniversary, it continues to champion the power and joy of childhood by doing what it’s always done, showing kids being kids. Beano artist Nigel Parkinson has drawn the celebrities assisting the Beanotown kids in stopping Mayor Brown from carving his own face into Mount Beano for the birthday celebrations. Each year we can’t wait to see what the next generation of comedians have to say, so a huge congratulations to Greasley Beauvale Primary School for taking home the crown – who doesn’t love a joke about teachers? Dennis’ 70th anniversary in 2021 was a huge success and the nation celebrated in style with a range of fabulous products and events.

All of this year’s finalist jokes have made the nation laugh and giggle and we thank every single class that took part in the competition. The cover, drawn by Beano artist Nigel Parkinson, also features comic regulars Dennis the Menace, Gnasher and Minnie the Minx. Our downloadable lesson plans are still available to help kids in the classrooms create new, original jokes to inspire and ignite their imaginations. An eight-page pull-out, titled Beanow, has also been created from children’s comments and pictures summing up the highlights of being a child in the present day, including dancing, rapping and catapults.

Indigo 1 have been immortalised by legendary Beano artist Nigel Parkinson in this week’s issue of the comic and were handed the trophy by Minnie’s illustrator Laura Howell. The world’s longest running comic, The Beano, is marking its 85th anniversary this week with guest appearances from top stars including Stormzy and Harry Styles. Kids and their families won’t be able to miss our celebrations as we commemorate both the iconic comic and our incredible characters which are so loved. The Prince and Princess of Wales also appear in the new comic strip, alongside other music stars such as Dua Lipa, Lewis Capaldi and Kate Bush - who enjoyed a chart resurgence due to one of her tracks being used in a key episode of Stranger Things - as well as social media influencer KSI. Stacked full of mischief and memorable characters, the colourful and chaotic publication is home to some of the most iconic and beloved comic book personalities.
