The book, a companion to the beautiful, DC-focused Mythology that came out 15 years ago, is jammed with hundreds of Ross’ covers, prints, sketches and pages – even his designs for the opening credits of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 and a series of busts based on his photorealistic style of art.

To nod to the print style of Lee and Kirby’s day, Ross also shook up his painting process, opting for flat coloring, swapping watercolor for black ink, shading in a whole new style, and adding a digital dot screen effect.Instead, the company and its imitators prefer the artists in their employ to fill in the narrative gaps, increasing the already granite-like density of the interconnected plot structure.

His main interests include DC Comics, Star Wars, Marvel Entertainment, Peanuts, Image Comics, Mass Effect, The Elder Scrolls, and other fantasy/fiction franchises. Other Ross projects for Dynamite include acting as the creative director on The Phantom comic book series. Alex was already one of the great voices in comics history and now he has broken his own mold to create this psychedelic comic book energy machine that somehow also answers the question: What would comics look like if Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were alive today and still showing us all how it’s done? And, yes, I'm old enough (groan) that this throwback should have had all of those nostalgic juices flowing . Having these four weirdos roll into town where there's a mystery or a problem or some sci-fi thing, solve the problem, and then move on struck me as a very interesting way to position the Fantastic Four and tell stories that would feel fresh and not like a retread of what we've seen before. I’m even responsible for at least one friend spending 18 of his own dollars on Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, a weird, lumpy B-movie made by a genuine B-movie director, Sam Raimi, with an absolutely inexcusable 20-minute lore dump smack in the middle of it. Ross’ story hearkens back to one of the high points of the legendary run by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, “This Man…This Monster! The artist wanted to sync up with the bombastic art Kirby was doing on the Fantastic Four during the title’s '60s heyday, but he didn't want to do a purely nostalgic period piece.
