The layout of the entries takes a little getting used to, but the examples and explanations are easy to follow, and it covers things my Kodansha books don't, so I'm finding it a useful addition to my, uh, *checks notes* pile of Japanese reference books. Studying for the N1 exam and talking with other examinees has made it clear how many people use "guess" when figuring out when to use wa versus ga. Once again, I advised that you continue onto to the Intermediate and Advanced textbooks as soon as you gain the nessary grammer of the first one. That being said, if you do get the basic book and find that it lacks some grammar patterns that you’re trying to learn, there’s a good chance it’s located in one of the other two books.

Highly recommended for teachers, learners, and takers of JLPT N4 or N5, this is a thorough, well-organized handbook that you’d be able to use for a long time.You won't use it nearly as much as the basic dictionary, but it will contain some grammar you can't find in volume one.

This book should only be bought by advanced level students… or people who have OCD and must complete the set dslfjksaodfija!
