Another crucial character trait of a successful midwife is having emotional and mental resilience. You may deal with situations that you find difficult, and emotionally separating yourself from these situations is essential. We want to support midwives to deliver the best and safest care possible, and to use our influence with others who can make changes to support midwives. We can do all of these things better by ensuring the voice of midwifery is heard in every part of the NMC. Our vision for midwifery is safe, effective and kind midwifery practice that improves the health and wellbeing of mothers, babies and their families. Our values The NHS and education sector encourage applications from people with a wide range of academic and vocational qualifications. Some examples of qualifications that may be considered broadly equivalent to five GCSEs include:As the professional regulator of midwives, we support midwives to deliver safe and effective midwifery care through our regulatory processes.

At the beginning of the course, you will be assigned an academic advisor who will provide you with regular academic and professional guidance and pastoral support. You will get to know them really well over your three years at Manchester. Our Midwifery Panel plays an important role in providing advice to the Council. It meets four times a year and the discussions and debates inform Council decisions in relation to midwifery. Helping them to adjust from not having a baby, to suddenly having this little life that they are responsible for. Which is a huge transition for any new parent to make. The Future Midwife standards are our bespoke education and proficiency standards that set the foundations for midwives’ education. They establish what we expect a new midwife to know, understand and be capable of doing, at the start of their career.Midwifery is a protected function in the UK, meaning it's a criminal offence for any person other than a registered midwife, or a registered medical practitioner, to attend on a woman in childbirth (except in emergencies or when in training as a student midwife or medical student).

Standards of competence for registered midwives

The Additional Care units reflect the Domain 4 of the Standards of Proficiency for Midwives (NMC, 2019), and builds on the Universal Care units to support you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to care for and support those with additional needs. Spending most weeks during Year 1 and 2 studying two days engaged in theory-learning activities such as lectures, seminars, group work and reading, and three days in the practice learning environment helps you to apply theory to practice, enjoy a varied schedule and have regular access to tutor support. This version is fully updated and referenced throughout to provide a detailed evidence base to support learning and further study. It is ideal for midwives in training, qualified midwives returning to practice, as well as other members of the obstetric healthcare team. Key FeaturesChoose from specialist options for your Year 2 elective to explore future midwifery careers, including research, education and global midwifery practice (subject to COVID-19 regulations).
