About this deal

Baby-head broccoli and calabrese: Planted 20cm (8in) apart, calabrese produces small, tight spears. ‘Kabuki’ is especially suitable.

Not long lasting however blooms make beautiful focal flowers – pods dry well for winter decoration. If you’d like to get a head start on the seed planting, you can plant your flower seeds indoors. You will need to provide a warm, bright location for your pots. Not enough heat will mean your seeds don’t germinate, and not enough light will make them grow spindly, weak stems. A sunny windowsill is ideal. You can also buy small heated propagators that work well, but remember you will still need to position these somewhere that receives plenty of light. Is it too late to grow flowers from seed?

Easy Methods for Sowing Tiny Seeds

Zinnias are ideal for giving your garden bags of colour, and they’re adored by bees. I use them to fill gaps in garden beds, and find that once they start flowering they keep going right into autumn.

Nigella, or love-in-a-mist, is one of the easiest annuals to grow from seed. Simply scatter the seeds on a patch of soil – somewhere in full sun is ideal – and leave them to do their thing. Radishes: All radishes are mini, but ‘Short Top Forcing’ is ideal for making small, easy-to-gather roots. Allow 15cm (6in) between rows and 2.5cm (1in) between plants. Each sowing should give you three or four cuts before the plants are exhausted. Many plants will become tough, bitter or try to flower and should then be lifted, composted and the ground fertilised and resown For more specific tips on growing flowers, see our Flower Growing Guides for inspiration and advice. Salad can be grown all year round in a heated greenhouse, but this is rarely economical. A sunny windowsill or conservatory can be successful, provided it does not get too hot. In unheated growing conditions, sowing can begin as soon as light levels and temperatures allow, producing crops from late spring to autumn.

I do have a few cold frames and small glass cloches that are vital to protect the delicate seedlings from the elements. These I place on garden tables and chairs, raised up and away from any slugs and snails. Like cosmos, nigella loves to self-seed, making it a truly low-maintenance plant that’s also very thrifty. Zinnia Mini- cauliflowers: ‘Igloo’ is usually recommended, although most summer cauliflowers can be planted at 15cm (6in) spacing to give mini heads.

Most of the flowers on this list are annuals, but lots of them will self-seed. This makes them ideal for low-maintenance gardening. What are the easiest flowers to grow from seed?Dwarf kales: Kales, such as ‘Redbor’, make attractive little plants with an abundance of coloured leaves, which are ideal for stir frying. Plant about 30cm (1ft) apart. You can sow marigold seeds directly into their final position in the garden or in pots, once any chance of frost has gone. They like full sun, and there are lots of different varieties to choose from, including ones suited to containers. Cornflowers It’s also easier than you might think to grow flowers from seed. You only need a few basic supplies to make it a success (more about those later), and if you choose flowers that are easy to grow from seed it doesn’t have to be time-consuming or fiddly. There are also lots of easy ways to make flowers bloom faster and for longer. The biggest challenge you’ll face is not getting carried away and planting more seeds than you have space for! It begins with something called scarification . This word describes how the seed coat changes to allow moisture to get in. I hope you found this article helpful.
