About this deal

Prompt removal of infected leaves early in the season may delay the build-up of the disease slightly, although weather conditions havethe greatest influence over the speed of spread. Dispose of plants at the end of the season. Don’t plant too densely, giving space between plants. Aim for an open environment to increase air circulation and reduce humidity Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location. There is anecdotal evidence that the disease varies in severity from year to year, so raking up and destroying infected leaves may be helpful in reducing the amount of infection in the following year

Keep out of reach of children Do not breathe spray Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area If medical advice is needed, have product container or label at hand. The fungicides tebuconazole (Provanto Fungus Fighter Concentrate), tebuconazole with trifloxystrobin (Provanto Fungus Fighter Plus, ToproseFungus Control and Protect), and triticonazole (Fungus Clear Ultra) are labelled for the control of a number of other diseases on ornamental plants, and may give some control of olive scab on olive trees grown as ornamental plants only, although this is not claimed by the manufacturers.Careful pruning of junipers to remove rust infections from the stems, or simply removing whole plants from the vicinity of pear trees will reduce the likelihood of infection, but note that the spores are airborne over quite long distances Spray the whole plant evenly to just before run off (when drips start to form at the tips of leaves) These products will also give incidental control of powdery mildew, another foliar disease that can affect antirrhinums. Ornamentals:The fungicides sulphur (Fungus Clear Ultra 2, Mildew Clear for Edibles), tebuconazole (Provanto Fungus Fighter Concentrate), tebuconazole with trifloxystrobin (Provanto Fungus Fighter Plus, Toprose Fungus Control & Protect), and triticonazole (Fungus Clear Ultra) are approved for the control of powdery mildewson ornamental plants. The fungus originates from western North America on related species, but proved highly infectious to the European Antirrhinum majus when accidentally introduced to the UK and mainland Europe in the last century. It releases dark brown spores from the pustules on the lower leaf surface and these are spread by the wind to initiate new infections on leaves.

No fungicides are currently being produced for use by home gardeners on trees from which the fruit will be consumed. The fungicides tebuconazole (Provanto Fungus Fighter Concentrate), tebuconazole with trifloxystrobin (Provanto Fungus Fighter Plus, Toprose Fungus Control & Protect), and triticonazole (Fungus Clear Ultra) are approved for the control of rust diseases on ornamental plants, and could be used on ornamental pear species from whichany fruit will not be consumed. Destroying fallen infected leaves in autumn will reduce the amount of infectious spores next spring. Promptly pruning out infected shoots will reduce subsequent infection. Choose resistant species. The most susceptible species are Cornus florida and C. nuttallii and, to a possibly lesser extent, C. kousa. In studies in the USA, C. controversa and C. sericea were also susceptible. Native European Cornus species in the UK appear unaffected. There is currently insufficient information available for other species The fungicides tebuconazole (Provanto Fungus Fighter Concentrate), tebuconazole with trifloxystrobin (Provanto Fungus Fighter Plus, Toprose Fungus Control & Protect), and triticonazole (Fungus Clear Ultra) are approved for the control of rust diseases on ornamental plants. Something else I like about Fungus Fighter Plus is that it’s safe to use around insects and other beneficial organisms, making it a safe choice that won’t disrupt your garden’s ecosystem. Fungus Fighter: at a glanceBecause most of the growth of powdery mildews is found on the plant surface they are easily targeted with fungicides.

Provanto Fungus Fighter Plus is a systemic fungicide that provides long lasting protection for up to three weeks. Systemic means that the fungicide is absorbed into the plants sap stream to eradicate and prevent the development of the disease. On pears, the brown fungal growths produced on the underside of infected leaves release spores which cannot reinfect pear, but instead are wind-dispersed and infect several juniper species, causing perennial stem infections. In spring these produce orange, gelatinousoutgrowths, which in turn produce wind-blown spores that reinfect pears. No fungicides are available to gardeners for use on olive trees from which the fruit will be harvested and consumed. The RHS believes that avoiding pests, diseases and weeds by good practice in cultivation methods, cultivar selection, garden hygiene and encouraging or introducing natural enemies, should be the first line of control. If chemical controls are used, they should be used only in a minimal and highly targeted manner. Non-chemical controlFungicides for gardeners (Adobe Acrobat pdf document outlining fungicides available to gardeners) Links Do not over-fertilise (especially not too much nitrogen) as succulent growth is particularly susceptible Prune shrubs to give an open structure (which will again improve air circulation and reduce humidity) Powdery mildew fungi produce microscopic air-borne dispersal spores from the fungal growth on the plant surface. These have an unusually high water content, enabling them to infect under drier conditions than most other fungal pathogens. Where disease is common, the maximum protection can be achieved by an initial application when leaves first emerge in spring. Repeat ten days later and then apply every fourteen days.
