About this deal

There were a couple typos in the book- it definitely could have been edited better. That didn't really affect my rating or enjoyment but just know that before going in. The characters are nothing new. Take whatever recently published fantasy book dubbed as a ‘TikTok book’, and you will find the same 2D, boring, plain characters.

It has enemies to lover trope. It has tending to wounds trope. It has the ‘who did this to you’ trope.” Okay, but what’s the book about? What is the book trying to accomplish? What makes it different from all the other books out there with similar tropes?Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya . . . The exceptional. The Elites. The Elites have possessed powers for decades, gifted to them by the Plague, while those born Ordinary are just that, banished from the kingdom and shunned from society. kai azer is my new favorite book boyfriend. he gives off such a tristan dugray vibes ( if you know you know :)) and i’m literally living for it. i’m just so in love with confident, flirty and effortlessly funny men who are not scared to show interest. and he was it all. literally he is THE standard. Delivery with Standard Australia Post usually happens within 2-10 business days from time of dispatch. Please be aware that the delivery time frame may vary according to the area of delivery and due to various reasons, the delivery may take longer than the original estimated timeframe. The worse of it all is that Prince Kai—the male lead—claims to be a monster (because it’s a first-person narration) to then spare the life of a little girl because ‘he doesn’t kill children’. I love the morally gray trope as much as the next reader, but these days this trope is approached on tiptoes. Roberts wants her characters to appear darker, but she never commits to said darkness. She just tells us that he’s a monster and calls it a day.

The Powerless Trilogy by Lauren Roberts - Goodreads

i think lauren has a lot of growth ahead as an author and i mean that as a compliment. i do look forward to the next book and really hope for a more natural story (not too trope-y) with more original development in the storyline. there is SO MUCH potential here. Powerless is set in the kingdom of Ilya, where there are Elites and Ordinaries- the Elites possess incredible powers and seek to get rid of the Ordinaries, as they believe them to corrupt society. Paedyn Gray is an Ordinary posing as an Elite to prevent her being hunted by the Elites. When she meets Kai Azer, one of Ilya's princes, sparks fly- and then they both end up in the Purging Trials, a brutal competition where the most talented Elites display their powers. But without a power, Paedyn must fight to survive the trials- and protect her heart from Kai, who she knows she shouldn't fall for... The thing about building a book around tropes is that tropes are not meant to be the foundation of a book. Tropes are simply things that should come natural to the characters, things that enrich the reading process. A book based on tropes is a book with weak planning. This sparkling edition will include a special case stamping, bonus content, and a teaser to book two in this heart-pounding series! Wow. What a debut. I read this in 2 days and I'm dying for the sequel. The romance, the angst, the ending... YES.the first half of this book was nearly a copy and paste of the hunger games. while some readers probably want that, it took away from originality for me. i could NOT stop comparing for storyline. (i have not read red queen, so i can’t compare to that one.) Ironic that her bright teal hair matches her name. I’d never seen the young women who conducted the interviews for the previous Trials, but I’ve heard enough about her unique appearance to identify her.”

Powerless By Roberts Lauren |The Works

The worldbuilding didn't survive too much of a thinky think. I don't think it was a good idea to introduce genocide and oppression without engaging with those ideas properly. It felt very much like this book was trying to be Hunger Games but it had as much depth as the Selection. (This review is getting long but I have so many issues with the reform revolutionaries in the selection and the violent vs nonviolent thing going on there). That feels so mean to say I'm sorry but also please. PLEASE. I can suspend my disbelief about the girl getting away with being an Ordinary, but I draw the line as using revolution as an aesthetic without real political worldbuilding behind it. But the best part of this book was definitelyyy the ROMANCE 🤭🤭🤭 I love a tension-filled romance in fantasies and when i tell this one had tension, it had TENSIONNN 😩😩🦋🦋 The chemistry was insanee and i was eating up their scenes like a starved man 🤌🤌 Kai was literally so obsessed with her and we love to see it. It also had all the good tropes- knife to the throat? Tending to their wounds? Who did this to you? Training scenes? Literally all in here ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 Kai and Paedyn are such a good couple 🥺🥺 This bled into poor pacing. Every single time a major event or revelation happened, I noted how far it was into the book. It just felt very janky and bloated. It felt like the characters were static and nothing was really happening even tho people were quite literally dying. Every chapter ended with Kai being like "omfg what is this girl doing to me" and Pae being like "I fawking hate it here but I kinda wanna smash". The train was not moving. I was reading at the speed of light, breaking the sound barrier, and it still took sooooo long this book was so bloated. This was a good decent book. it was just that I’ve seen it all before? I mean it’s really a strong debut with a solid storyline and interesting characters and world building. However, it’s the kind of fantasy book where you could guess every single thing that’s going to happen in a typical YA fantasy book. It didn’t add anything if you get what I mean.
