About this deal

Thirty years may have passed since Ian Stuart Donaldson left this earth, but his legacy remains and he is most certainly not forgotten. Having been active in racial Nationalist politics throughout my entire adult life, I thought I would like to share a few of my memories of those early days in Leeds. Last year, the Bound for Glory gig, due to to be the biggest ever gig to be held in Scotland, was called off with a few days to go after 17,000 people signed a HOPE not hate petition calling for the American band to be refused entry and the Scottish Justice Minister wrote to the Home Secretary to add his voice to the opposition. However, John “Grinny” Grinton later stated in an interview that he had no problem with the new Skrewdriver and that he became a member of the National Front along with Donaldson.

On 10 July 1993, Stuart and Skrewdriver played their final concert in Waiblingen, Germany. The programme, Second anniversary of the Kreuzritter für Deutschland, was organized by freelance writer and white nationalist book author Andreas J. Voigt, who leads the semi-secret society Deutschherrenklub. The memoir No Retreat confesses how he was constantly targeted. “The event that seemed to give Stuart the real horrors was when he went out early one morning to buy a newpaper and a pint of milk and was hit across the head by a large mancunian wielding a Lucozade bottle.” At the time the coroner delivered a verdict of accidental death stating: “We are still no nearer finding out what caused this tragic accident. All we can say is that because of the car’s two defects the car became less easy to control.”Skrewdriver gigs were regularly the scenes of violent clashes, with their 1992 planned London concert becoming the “battle of Waterloo”, with hundreds of skinheads and anti-fascists fighting running battles on the streets. The city of Sunderland in the North-East of England was the focus for the 2023 Ian Stuart Donaldson memorial concert. This enthusiastic gathering celebrated the life, music and politics of Ian Stuart and suitably marked the 30th anniversary of his tragic death. Last year saw hundreds of skinheads gather at a field near Northampton. It is expected that as many as 5,000 neo-Nazi sympathisers could make the trip this weekend for the secret 20th anniversary event in Upper Heyford.

Before forming Skrewdriver, Ian was singing in a band called Tumbling Dice who mostly played cover versions of the Stones, Free and The Who. At the time it was common for Pub bands to play cover songs all night. Tumbling Dice soon became popular around the Poulton area. Things were going pretty well for Tumbling Dice, so a rough demo was cut and Ian set about forwarding the tapes to various record companies. He soon found himself pleasantly surprised to receive an invitation to join a record label in London. Unfortunatly, the other band members weren't as keen on the move and in 1976 The Tumbling Dice disbanded.

On The Go

When asked about his attitude towards SHARP, RASH and political correctness, he replied: “Nothing to do with them…SEARCH AND DESTROY!!!” Since his death he has become the icon of far-right skinhead groups, with concerts planned each year in commemoration, where white power bands perform in front of swastika banners with Third Reich memorabilia openly on sale. The skinhead image was a “maybe in hindsight misconceived” fashion thing. It was cooked up by a bunch of us, including the band’s then management and the photographer Peter Kodik.”

Several of the other band members have criminal convictions due to their association with the Stomper Crew, another violent Quebec-based extreme right skinhead gang. PROFITING FROM HATE The festival, which was publicly music orientated was actually a celebration for Ian Stuart Donaldson, a white supremacist leader, on the anniversary of his death. We had read their lyrics on Youtube a long time ago, but our poor knowledge of English did not allow us to deepen their meaning. His former friend and mentor Joe Pearce, once a leading member of the National Front, explained that during his time in prison Donaldson became more hardened in his beliefs. PROFITING FROM HATE

Ian Stuart visiting Andreas J. Voigt and the Kreuzritter für Deutschland in Stuttgart, Germany, 1993 The enormity of our task is almost beyond comprehension. Sometimes state oppression, red opposition, and treachery by traitors in our midst makes us all feel like giving up – but at all costs we must continue our battle.”– Ian Stuart Donaldson.
