Underlining or dotting a letter was used to double it; in the cases of ⟨(⟩, ⟨)⟩ and ⟨+⟩ the doubling line went through the letter (so that pp looked rather like ⟨ǂ⟩), and in the case of ⟨~⟩, the doubling line was vertical (so that tt looked a bit like ⟨ɫ⟩), but the following double letters had special forms: ee ⟨;⟩, ff ⟨Q⟩, ll ⟨:⟩, oo ⟨!⟩, ss ⟨?⟩. I could feel the same in at least two more instances & named her sister, Eliza, as one, saying that I did not dislike her in my heart but rather admired her as a pretty girl. I asked Ann if she liked me the less for my candour, etc., etc. She said no, kissed me & proved by her manner she did not. I reference Liddington’s work here particularly because the biographer wrote this book without ever having read Anne Lister’s diaries for herself. She is entirely reliant upon secondary sources. The book is basically a recap of Helena Whitbread’s and Jill Liddington’s works, with some additional references to Lister’s letters and correspondence thrown in. Plus a LOT of editorializing - in addition to the steaming piles of judgement, the biographer regularly states her own interpretation as though it’s proven fact. And it’s interpretation based often on extremely thin evidence. RTS Programme Awards 2020". Royal Television Society. 3 March 2020. Archived from the original on 26 November 2020 . Lister didn't make a lot of friends among her tenants. She used to pressure them into voting Tory and refused to rent land to people who didn’t share her political beliefs. Her notoriety only increased after she began her new domestic life with Walker. Lister took an active role in managing her significant other’s estate, which was located near Shibden Hall. Soon, a dispute broke out over a drinking well on Walker’s land. Although residents of the broader community depended on that well, Lister considered it family property. So to assert her control over the situation, she had a barrel of tar dumped into the water—making it unfit for consumption. In retaliation, effigies of both Lister and Walker were burned. (Ultimately, a magistrate ruled that the water belonged to the public, and that Lister’s actions were unjustified.) 8. Lister died while vacationing in the country of Georgia. Lister, Ann (2000). The author explains in the very first chapter that she deciphered none of Anne Lister's diaries herself and based her book entirely on secondary sources created by other historians. Go read the books by Jill Liddington and Helena Whitbread instead of this, (or better than that you can now access the diaries themselves and many people around the world are deciphering them as we speak so they will be fully digitized in a few years.) I owe a good deal to this journal. By unburdening my mind on paper I feel, as it were, to get rid of it; it seems made over to a friend that hears it patiently, keeps it faithfully, and by never forgetting anything, is always ready to compare the past & present & thus to cheer & edify the future. In the last third of the book, she is openly derisive when describing Lister’s activities.

Wednesday 20 November [Halifax] At 12:40, too George in the gig & drove to Mrs Taylor’s. Sat for my likeness perhaps 1 1/4 hour. Very well satisfied with the sketch. There is something so very characteristic in the figure. Paid for it, 2 guineas … Neither Mrs Rawson nor Catherine thought it a good likeness. Found great fault with the mouth &, at first, with almost every part of the whole thing.

Returning to Shibden Hall in 1831, she found life with her father and sister Marian so uncomfortable that she almost immediately left again, visiting the Netherlands for a short trip with Mariana Lawton. [26] All in all, between 1826 and 1832, she only spent a short period of time at Shibden Hall, with travels around Britain and Europe allowing her to avoid her family at home. [27]This book is judge, jury, and executioner to its subject, which feels like a complete violation of the rules of a biography. You can tell just by the table of contents - her life is divided up not by milestone events but by the women she seduces. Because clearly when someone isn’t straight, the only interesting thing about them is their sex life. Everything else Lister was ever involved or interested in - except her travels - is dismissed with a couple of lines each. I would've loved knowing more about Ann Walker, too. I don't know what sort of documents exist in relation to her besides Anne's diary entries, so perhaps that's not possible. But I wanted to know more about her struggles with mental health and how she was seemingly able to overcome them (at least while Anne was alive). Just the fact that she had these issues that arose from pressure from her family regarding her fortune and her life as well as what I assume to be something akin to modern-day internalized homophobia is really intriguing to me, so I wanted to take a deep dive into her psyche, in a way.
