You can take minibusses to some parts of the island, but you’ll have to wait on the road for them to come, and they don’t go everywhere. The sand here is a reddish color and so are the surrounding cliffs, but the water is crystal clear and it’s relatively quiet here. When we were on Zakynthos Island, we rented a car and it’s a great way to get around, so whether you want to rent it in Athens and drive all the way to Kyllini to catch the ferry, or fly to Zakynthos and rent it there, it’s worth having a car. Confusingly, there are two beaches in Zante with the same name. One is a quiet secluded beach on the North East coast and the second, more popular beach is on the Vassilikos peninsular not far from the well-known Banana beach.

Set right on the harbour, this friendly little Greek restaurant serves up some tasty food. It’s fresh, so you have to be patient while they prepare it (some dishes take up to 45 minutes to hit the table), but it’s worth it. They do great moussaka, some tasty pastas and excellent seafood dishes. Prosilio Restaurant Since the coastline is protected and not really developed, the place is not very crowded, and it’s ideal for a day of relaxation and quietness surrounded by pristine seas and golden sand. This beach is perfect for small kids learning to swim since it’s very calm and shallow. Pelagaki Beach On the subject of transportation, avoid using quad bikes as they can be unsafe, particularly for inexperienced riders. Instead, consider renting a car, scooter, or bicycle, but do ensure to follow local traffic laws and wear necessary safety gear such as helmets.

The one issue we had with Zante was the garbage problem. It may be getting better now, but when we were there the island had piles of garbage on every corner and when we asked locals what was going on, they told us that it’s a relatively new problem but the government was working on fixing it.Most people who stay in Zante Town will be planning to do day trips from here to see the rest of the island. The best way to see Zakynthos is either by renting your own car (prices start at around €15/day + gas), by renting a boat (prices start at around €80/day + gas), or by joining a day tour around the island (prices start at around €35/person).
