It’s just the sort of mystery that Raker loves so well, and he is soon on the trail of Fiona Murphy, nee Camberwell. But one disappearance leads to another that Raker believes is linked and things begin to get very dicey indeed. One plot line has suddenly split into two, and it’s the first sign that things are going to get complicated – so be prepared to settle in and concentrate as you read it. Already under great risk due to his past actions, Raker’s latest investigations prove more dangerous than even he could ever envisage, as his search grid unwittingly begins to entwine with perhaps his most vicious foe ever. A relic of a monstrous regime, the poisonous point of a broken spear. Would have been 5 stars, but the outrageous coincidences which led to the denouement was a little too much, I thought. The novel has it all, well, maybe not romance, with an interesting plot, violence, hidden agendas, jaw dropping twists, a genuinely creepy opponent, tension and some unexpected history. It also has a subplot about Raker’s friend Colm Healey’s time in jail and his ability to betray the crimes Raker committed to keep Healey safe. Personally I felt that the tensest moments in the novel came from this will he/won’t he scenario. How they both get out of it unscathed (at least for the moment) is the novel’s most jaw dropping moment, out of several contenders. The fates of the two men are inextricably linked, although they vehemently deny any previous friendship. But while Healy stews behind bars, Raker has other fish to fry, courtesy of someone else we became acquainted with in the previous book. Rebekah Murphy is a Brit now living in New York – where the pair first met. She is in the UK to ask for Raker’s help to find her mother, who walked out of the family home in Cambridge nearly 40 years ago and vanished into thin air. Now Rebekah has started to receive condolence cards from her mother – or are they from someone else entirely? And with his closest ally under arrest and about to reveal some truths of his own, the danger to Raker is coming from all sides... An Interview with Tim Weaver". The Darley Anderson Blog. 1 August 2012 . Retrieved 1 September 2013. Frank used to be a cop,’ she confirmed. ‘This is, uh… This is a big step for me, flying all the way out here. I just needed some moral support.’ Weaver has a real skill of writing descriptively, bringing a variety of scenes to life, without the reader realising, placing the reader there in the story. As I've said although this is book 12 in the series, It can be read as a standalone because there are references to past events but they are briefly explained, which helps the reader to connect with the characters. It always amazes me how authors manage to not only invent new stories for long-running characters but also keep the books fresh, Tim Weaver is an artist at that!

As always, the story is complex and requires a lot of concentration to keep it straight in your head but if you have read his books before you will understand this and know it is definitely worth it.Healy is in prison and Raker is desparate to speak to him as the Police are pushing him for information following Healy faking his own death, and Raker helping him with other stuff. But will he reach him in time? I do generally enjoy this ‘Missing’ series by the talented Tim Weaver and feel unlike some series’ every one can be read without reading any previous,in this book the basics of the past are mentioned to help new readers understand what has happened beforehand but tbh it holds it’s own as a good stand alone story I love this series that features David Raker. You always know that this author will bring something special to each of his books in this series. His latest The Last Goodbye just blew me away. Richly descriptive and characters you feel as if you really know. Another MUST READ from this very talented author and a great addition to this gripping and very addictive series.
