The Grace children — twin brothers Simon and Jared, and their older sister Mallory — are the main characters of the book series. That means viewers can expect a trio of kids at the center of the Disney+ show. What surprised me the most was actually the length of the film. It was fairly short (90 minutes) and I felt that the producers made a huge mistake by attempting to cram all five books into one film instead of dividing them into separate features. I had recognized a few of the scenes from the books, but overall it seemed very rushed and excluded many of the series most exciting moments. Any fan of the books would probably be disappointed in the way the series was handled and executed.

Each book is separated by a few days or weeks and the events only follow each other directly in the last two books. I don’t think you can really spoil yourself with these books even if you’ve seen the movie, because only the events of book 1 and book 5 occur in the screen adaptation. Play the game ‘after that’. In this game, the children are in pairs. One of them starts by saying something that they have done, e.g.‘I ran down the stairs.’ Their partner then adds on something new, using the words ‘after that’, e.g. ‘After that I had breakfast.’ Each partner then keeps building up what happened next, taking it in turns to use the words ‘after that’. Working with the texts I’m obviously not going to go over each book in turn, I am adding each blurb, but don’t worry, they are not really the type of book that you can spoil yourself easily with, and if you have seen the movie and think you know what is going to happen, think again, these books surprised me at every turn. It might come in use so I am wearing it all the time. The filmmakers did a great job of adapting the stories. I got to witness firsthand what goes into making a film and understood many of the changes from the source material. The screenwriter couldn’t jam everything from all five books into one film. It would have been really long, and really expensive. Perhaps one day the studio will re-examine it as a television series.
