Kreider, R. B., Kalman, D. S., Antonio, J., Ziegenfuss, T. N., Wildman, R., Collins, R., … Lopez, H. (2017, June 13). International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand: safety and efficacy of creatine supplementation in exercise, sport, and medicine. Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 14(18) Few studies have looked at how creatine supplements might interact with prescription medication. However, the NIH recommends people be cautious when taking creatine supplements alongside nephrotoxic drugs, meaning medications that can cause kidney damage. Some common drugs known to be potentially nephrotoxic include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs ( NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen, piroxicam and indomethacin. Some antibiotics, called aminoglycosides, also carry a risk of kidney damage that could be amplified by creatine. Gentamicin, amikacin and tobramycin are examples of aminoglycoside antibiotics. The immunosuppressant cyclosporine can also have this effect. The NIH warns that combining creatine supplements with nephrotoxic drugs may increase a person's risk of kidney damage.

In summary, the current body of evidence does not indicate that creatine supplementation increases total testosterone, free testosterone, DHT or causes hair loss/baldness. Does creatine lead to dehydration and muscle cramping? Based on the current evidence, creatine does not cause dehydration or cramping. If anything, it may protect against these conditions. Summary The optimal timing of creatine supplementation is hotly debated. Learn about when to take creatine to maximize its impressive benefits. READ MORE Supplements can be used to improve athletic performance, build muscle mass, and treat problems that result when a body cannot metabolize creatine fully. IF YOU’RE LOOKING to gain muscle mass, you’ve probably been advised to do a couple things: lift weights, eat a lot of protein, and start taking a creatine supplement. The creatinine levels that experts consider to be normal may vary among different hospitals and laboratories. In summary, because creatine has a completely different chemical structure, it is not an anabolic steroid. Does creatine cause kidney damage/renal dysfunction?

In people with diabetes, blood sugar levels can become too high, leading to health problems, including kidney disease. DHT is a metabolite of testosterone, formed when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts free testosterone to DHT [ 63]. In males, DHT can bind to androgen receptors in susceptible hair follicles and cause them to shrink, ultimately leading to hair loss [ 64]. However, in the van der Merwe et al. [ 61] study, no increase in total testosterone was found in the 16 males who completed the study. Free testosterone was not measured. Moreover, the increase in DHT and the DHT: testosterone ratio remained well within normal clinical limits. Furthermore, baseline (prior to supplementation), DHT was 23% lower in the creatine group (0.98 nmol/L) compared to the placebo group (1.26 nmol/L). Thus the small increase in DHT in the creatine group (+ 0.55 nmol/L after 7 days of supplementation and + 0.40 nmol/L after 21 days of supplementation), in combination with a small decrease in the placebo DHT response (-0.17 nmol/L after 7 days of supplementation and -0.20 nmol/L after 21 days of supplementation) explains the “statistically significant” increase in DHT noted by van der Merwe et al. [ 61]. While it is possible that creatine supplementation upregulated 5-alpha-reductase activity in these males (potentially leading to increased formation of DHT), no study has reported hair loss/baldness in humans. Creatinine is a byproduct of normal muscle function. It is a metabolite of creatine phosphate, which the muscles use as an energy source. However, the fact that creatine raises creatinine levels does not mean that it is harming your liver or kidneys ( 15).People with high creatinine levels may experience different symptoms, depending on the cause. Drug toxicity

Around 95 percent of creatine in the human body is stored in skeletal muscle, and 5 percent is in the brain. But them there's the not-so-great news: You can incorrectly take creatine (read: "user error"), which can result in side effects. Take creatine the wrong way and you won't experience the same benefits as someone who follows direction. In other words, you're wasting your money. (And, if you're buying the good stuff, creatine supplements aren't cheap.)

High creatinine levels can be a sign of abnormal kidney function. However, other factors can temporarily raise creatinine levels, including dehydration and high protein consumption. What should I do if my creatinine is high?
