About this deal

Regardless of the truth, the suggestion of the monster’s existence makes Loch Ness one of Scotland’s most popular tourist attractions with thousands visiting its shores each year with the hope of catching a rare glimpse of the famous monster. The creature disported itself, rolling and plunging for fully a minute, its body resembling that of a whale, and the water cascading and churning like a simmering cauldron. Soon, however, it disappeared in a boiling mass of foam. Both onlookers confessed that there was something uncanny about the whole thing, for they realised that here was no ordinary denizen of the depths, because, apart from its enormous size, the beast, in taking the final plunge, sent out waves that were big enough to have been caused by a passing steamer." A Nessie plush appears in two scenes in Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice, first on the screen of the elves as the toy that Timmy Terwelp wants, and then among Grace Goodwin's toys. He admits he's unlikely to give up the hunt. "I always wanted to try to solve one of the world's most enduring mysteries," he says. "And there is such joy in living the life that I always wanted to live." Campbell, Steuart. The Loch Ness Monster – The Evidence, Buffalo, New York, Prometheus Books, 1985.

For 60 years the photo was considered evidence of the monster's existence, although skeptics dismissed it as driftwood, [17] an elephant, [42] an otter or a bird. The photo's scale was controversial; it is often shown cropped (making the creature seem large and the ripples like waves), while the uncropped shot shows the other end of the loch and the monster in the centre. The ripples in the photo were found to fit the size and pattern of small ripples, rather than large waves photographed up close. Analysis of the original image fostered further doubt. In 1993, the makers of the Discovery Communications documentary Loch Ness Discovered analyzed the uncropped image and found a white object visible in every version of the photo (implying that it was on the negative). It was believed to be the cause of the ripples, as if the object was being towed, although the possibility of a blemish on the negative could not be ruled out. An analysis of the full photograph indicated that the object was small, about 60 to 90cm (2 to 3ft) long. [41] The Pict, a group of ancient people who lived in the area now called Scotland, carved “a mysterious beast with flippers” into stone, per Britannica. It’s possible this is an early depiction of Nessie. Smith, Oliver (2023). "Nessie and Noctilucent Clouds: A Meteorological Explanation for Some Loch Ness Monster Sightings". Coolabah (34): 25–45. Dozens of sightings have since been claimed, many of which have turned out to be hoaxes. In 2009, a newspaper reader claims to have spotted ‘Nessie’ whilst browsing Google Earth’s satellite photos of Loch Ness. a b c "The Loch Ness Monster and the Surgeon's Photo". Museumofhoaxes.com. The Stoor Worm, or Mester Stoor Worm, was a gigantic evil sea serpent in Orcadian folklore, capable of contaminating plants and destroying animals and humans with its putrid breath. It is probably an Orkney variant of the Norse Jormungandr, also known as the Midgard Serpent, or world serpent, and has been described as a sea dragon.

Its home is deep and dark Loch Ness, located in the Scottish Highlands, 23 miles southwest of Inverness. It’s one of several interconnected bodies of water, 755 feet deep at the deepest point and murky with poor depth visibility because of the high peat content of the surrounding soil. If you go on one of several boat trips from Inverness to explore Loch Ness and do a bit of Nessie spotting as I have done, you will understand why the landscape invites legends of monsters and other weird tales. The monster, which is described as snake-like with a cat, dog, or snake head, was first mentioned in a manuscript from 1635, which reports that the monster had been tied up at the bottom of the lake by a heavy stone covered in runes. Another folklore tale about the origin of the monster is even more colorful. According to that story, two trolls were tinkering with their cauldrons at the shore of the lake when suddenly a nasty smell emerged and, from the other pot, a horrible, snake-like creature emerged and slid into the lake.
