Chapman: [slightly irritatedly and with exaggeratedly clear accent] One of the cross beams has gone out askew on the treadle. Alongside their boss DCI Thomas Nightingale, the SAU find themselves embroiled in a mystery that encompasses London’s tangled history, foreign lands and, most terrifyingly of all, the North! Most of the shops had been owned by the same families for over fifty years, and so it was with Samuel Arnold & Co, two thirds of the way down the main corridor.

THE BRAND NEW NOVEL IN THE #1 BESTSELLING RIVERS OF LONDON SERIES

Frank Caffrey; LFB ( London Fire Brigade) Fire Investigator, ex- para and a key "associate" of the Folly. hollbrok-smith is always perfect as peter going from polite voice to private and through the other characters like he is them all At Dragonmeet convention in London, on 30 November 2019, it was announced that a role-playing game based on the book series would be published by Chaosium. [20] The game was released in PDF version on 30 November 2022, pending book version. Is the angel after all six of the group members / ring bearers (Peter jokingly calls them that), and if so, why? The investigation into it is complicated not only by Peter and Nightingale’s unfamiliarity with killer angels, but also by the approaching birth of Peter and Beverley’s twins. His partner, river goddess Beverley Brook, has made it clear that Peter has to wrap up his investigation before she goes into labor so he can be there for the birth and take paternity leave. Detective Sergeant Miriam Stephanopoulos; case officer of the Belgravia Murder Investigation Team and 'right-hand man' to DCI Seawoll

She was waiting for us outside the entrance to the London Silver Vaults on Chancery Lane on a cold wet Wednesday morning in April, a hefty-looking white woman with sharp blue eyes and resting scowl face. At least I assume that was her habitual expression-certainly it was the one I saw the most. And she was definitely scowling when I tooled up with the Folly's latest trainee in tow. ( August 2020) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message) That combination makes Aaronovitch’s books real gems, but should not be seen as an indication that the reader will be bored. The real joy of the series is its author’s ability to impart those pieces of obscure knowledge, subtly wrapped up within fight scenes, city centre car chases, and a decent grasp of what it takes of succeed in the realm of modern inner-city policing, from kit, through procedure, and a level of mental resilience that often doubles as grim good humour. Any one of those, in isolation, would make a Rivers of London novel worthy of consideration. Taken together, they make them a popular staple, and Amongst Our Weapons is no exception. Ximinez [angrily hurling away the cushions]: Hm! She is made of harder stuff! Cardinal Fang! Fetch...THE COMFY CHAIR! Ximinez: Now, old lady -- you have one last chance. Confess the heinous sin of heresy, reject the works of the ungodly -- *two* last chances. And you shall be free -- *three* last chances. You have three last chances, the nature of which I have divulged in my previous utterance.Reviewing the ninth book in the series, ″Amongst our Weapons″, in The Guardian, Lisa Tuttle wrote "Aaronovitch has no peers when it comes to successfully combining the appeal of a down-to-earth police procedural with all-out fantasy: here are real places, real history and real problems complicated by the existence of magic, ancient spirits, fairies, ghosts and talking foxes, all dwelling alongside ordinary, clueless humans. His plotting is still satisfyingly inventive and the continuing characters maintain their charm in the ninth novel of a series that began in 2011. [29] See also [ edit ] Don't worry if you don't feel anything," I said. "If you're unsure don't hesitate to ask me. Remember, that's part of the training process." Khaleeli, Homa and Weale, Sally (16 June 2015). "Michelle Obama tells London schoolgirls 'the world needs you' ". The Guardian. The case itself is another interesting one that sees Grant and others in the Specialist Unit visit parts of London and beyond. It is full of the secret societies and misuse of magic that you have come to love about the series. The banter between the officers is also there. Aaronovitch always grounds the stories by making the interaction between the police and the public so entertaining. There is a cynicism and humour to the police that feels authentic. Water Weed – When Chelsea and Olympia decide to earn a few quid on the side, Peter and Bev find themselves confronting London's new queenpin of crime – the brutal and beautiful Hoodette!

Ximinez [with a cruel leer]: Now -- you will stay in the Comfy Chair until lunch time, with only a cup of coffee at eleven. [aside, to Biggles] Is that really all it is? All the elements are present for another solid outing for the series, but there is more to the book than this. Peter’s partner is about to give birth to their first children. This is complicated enough, but when the mother is an essence of a river, it gets even harder. Grant is on a timeline to solve the case before the children are born. Over the books Aaronovitch has continued to develop Grant and all the other characters. The books have reached a point where change feels natural. As a new father, Peter has more responsibilities at home, but also at work as be trains other officers. The final acts of the book are to promise further evolution in the series, and it has been done superbly. Shortly after this, Althea’s ring is stolen in the night, an event she doesn’t notice until after the fact; it seems that she was put under a trance by the thief. David Moore’s apartment, Peter and Danni discover, was also broken into. Strange symbols were left on his wall, as was also the case in Althea’s apartment, and the child of one of his neighbors says she saw alien that day.Lovers of the Rivers of London series will enjoy this book. I did, but I don’t feel it is the best of the series. The plot was fairly complex and there were a lot of new characters which made it a bit difficult to follow. I had to listen a second time to really understand it. Would be hard to follow if you did not read/listen previous parts. Some characters from previous books are mentioned, talked about or play their roles but are not reintroduced.

Peter Grant, the hero of the series and a police detective specializing in investigating paranormal crimes, is called to the scene along with his counterpart, Sahra Guleed, and his boss, Thomas Nightingale (Peter also brings with him his trainee/apprentice, Danni, whom he and Nightingale have recently recruited). Ximinez: Now, old woman -- you are accused of heresy on three counts -- heresy by thought, heresy by word, heresy by deed, and heresy by action -- *four* counts. Do you confess? When they follow a lead from David’s cell phone’s, the police find a second victim. Preston Carmichael, a man David called multiple times in his last few days, was older than David. A search for photos that both David and Preston appear in turns up a 1990s group photograph of six people, including two women and two other men. The photo seems to have been taken inside a church.

The title "Amongst our Weapons", and the chapter headings comprise a reference to the Monty Python sketch "The Spanish Inquisition".
