Throughout the book I kept on wondering where was the author of The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair, because it cannot be the same person who wrote this book. All characters seem caricatures and stereotypes rather than real people. Not for a minute you believe they could be real people. Being simultaneously a little too perfect and a little too rife with mystery, I found the Verbier to have made the perfect setting for The Enigma of Room 622. Lush in its decor and populated by a wide cast of eccentric guests and idiosyncratic staff members, it feels like there’s always something of import happening somewhere, and always someone plotting something from the shadows. Ultimately, it feels like an outlandish setting, the only kind which could have allowed for the proper development of the novel’s plot. This copy is for your personal, non-commercial use only. Distribution and use of this material are governed by However, I think some of the issues are due to a poor translation which you can’t blame the author for. There are some fairly good twists towards the end although you have to wait a long time for them but at least they are unpredictable. Unfortunately they’re not sufficiently dynamic for me to raise the rating .

All these year's Macaire has been dealing with a single person, his handler, Wagner -- and, yes, if: "The whole business had the air of a spy novel", Macaire is fully on board and doesn't question the whole very odd set up. To begin with, there was an unsolved murder which once took place in room 622, but surprisingly enough, it only marks the tip of the iceberg. In one way or another, the room became pivotal to the succession of Switzerland’s largest private bank, to a counterintelligence operation known only as P-30, and the greatest scandal in hotel hospitality in human history. The Long Layers of Mystery in The Enigma of Room 622 Quando vejo calhamaços até tremo! It makes for an almost comic unraveling as to what actually was going on all those times -- ingenious, certainly, arguably, but also rather far-fetched (to put it mildly). Despite the relatively dark subject matter around which the story revolves, it is coloured by an atmosphere part-ridiculous, part-mad. To begin with, the author’s decision to insert himself as the story’s protagonist, being the most famous writer of his country with the ability to get virtually any woman he wants, prevented me from the very start from treating it like a usual novel. Rather, it felt like I was taking a peek at an alternate reality.

More time is dedicated to the murder in the past, which was a bit of a disappointment since the ‘today’ story is more interesting than the murder in the past. The wealthy private bank family machinations of the earlier murder seem unrealistic, bland and contrived, like having a complex plot explained to you after a movie leaves you totally befuddled. The frustrations over the constantly withheld information -- especially since it is done so blatantly -- don't help either. Many of the characters bite their tongue when they really should be more open -- most notably Anastasia -- and of course Macaire sits on that big secret of working so long as a secret agent.

Macaire's father was impressed by Lev and offered him a position at the bank -- despite Lev having no professional training or higher education. I don’t know if it’s meant to be a take on a French farce but that’s what it feels like with similar (not) humour. With this being said, I do see how some people might think the book to be a little too long for its own good. If you’re the kind of person who just wants to see the resolution dropped into their lap as fast as possible, then you’re probably going to struggle with certain segments which only feel like they raise more questions rather than provide solutions. I personally love this approach, but to each their own. Macaire understands that: "It had all begun to unravel fifteen years earlier", when his grandfather died and the presidency went to his father -- and when both Lev and Anastasia's paths first crossed with each other and with him.

Two overlapping storylines involve this trio: Macaire is the only son of Abel Ebezner, and the week in December leading up to the murder is also the week leading up the Ebenezer Bank's annual Gala Weekend at the Hôtel de Verbier, where the board of directors of Ebezner & Sons, a leading private Swiss bank, were set to announce the name of the new president, to succeed Abel, who had died earlier that year after fifteen years as head of the bank. A capa fascinou-me pela sua beleza na simplicidade.B- : too convoluted in its presentation for its own good, but there's some entertainment value to it, not least in how ridiculous the main plot winds up being Macaire es el tonto útil que es un buenazo y que da la impresión de que sería un fracasado si no hubiera nacido rico.
