Talisker was featured in the Diageo Distillers Edition in 2021 and 2020. The Whiskey Wash covered the 2021 editions in an article written by Ian Arnold, which can be found here. The Talisker in 2021 was a 10-year-old expression and after its initial aging in American Oak, it was also finished in ex-Amoroso cask. Finish: Long. Again, the two halves of the experience fade in tandem, both raisin-y and smoky, sweet and peat, at the end showing a final oaky drying tannin. To celebrate the Talisker distillery’s 175th anniversary in 2005, a no age statement commemorative single malt bottling was released. Two years later in 2007, Talisker 18 year old won ‘Best Single Malt In The World 2007’ at the World Whiskies Awards. Since 2008, the Talisker range has vastly expanded with a no age statement quartet and even a 40 year old expression. Talisker is now one of Diageo’s most distinguished single malt brands. Talisker 1984/2021 (51.9%, OB, Prima & Ultima Third Release, hogsheads and sherry butt, 2022) - 210622 Talisker makes the best single malt Scotch whisky on the Isle of Skye, and I will take issue with anyone who says otherwise. Seeing as they are the only operational distillery on Skye, one could just as easily make the argument that they produce the worst single malt on the island. I suppose I am choosing to see my Glencairn glass as half full, at least in this case. With Water: A few drops of water dampen the peat, and release a fog of vanilla. I’d skip the water. This mild-mannered, more mature Talisker, is elegant, scented but with plenty of personality and unmistakable character.

Not only is the release bottled ay 57% alcohol by volume, but the Talisker distillery itself is located on the globe at 57° 17′ .9 N latitude. Talisker describes the bottling as a “Special Strength,” not to be confused with cask strength offerings.

Dalwhinnie double-matured in ex-bodega Oloroso cask wood for a rich sweetness and spicy complexity to enhance the heathery, honeyed aromas and tastes of the fan favorite Dalwhinnie 15 Year Old Nose: Lots of smoke and dusty saw wood. Some sherry and citrus bananas and fruits are present as well. As with all Talisker’s there is a whiff of salty air about it, that mixes together and creates one of the most complex noses I have smelled. Very interested. Swirling the whisky around in the glass opens up to iodine as well. This powerful single malt whisky produced by the only distillery on the Isle of Skye is a very rugged spirit. Talisker is well balanced by the finishing cask. You feel the underlying 10-year whisky rise in the palate only to be tempered by the sweetness of the sherry. Despite being a younger whisky by Scotch standards it is balanced nicely by the Amoroso. I will say Amoroso doesn’t necessarily compliment the Talisker here, it really provides guardrails and mutes the harsher notes of the Scotch.The DEs (or least the only ones I’ve ever paid attention to, the Talisker and the Lagavulin) both have creation myths of being pretty much the standard bottle (so the 10 or the 16, respectively) with an extra ~1 year of age. The Distiller’s Edition from Talisker features additional maturation in ex-oloroso sherry casks. Though each annual limited release does not feature a overt age statement, the distillation and bottling years are clearly presented on the label. The Distiller’s Edition is bottled at the same 45.8% ABV (91.6 proof) as Talisker 10 Year. The idea with the Distillers Edition Collection, which got started in 1997, is that it is, per Diageo, “an annual release of Classic Single Malts, each double-matured in a different type of cask wood chosen carefully by Master Blenders to complement the characteristics of the whisky. The Talisker distillery has changed hands only once since this period, after Diageo added Talisker to its considerable portfolio. It has marketed the brand as part of its Classic Malts range in 1988. Talisker has been a welcome addition to this established series ever since, despite the fact that the distillery itself is pretty unusual. Talisker Distillery has the strange distinction of housing an odd number of wash stills to spirit stills, counting two wash stills and three spirit stills in total. The third spirit still is a remnant from an era in which Talisker used to produce triple distilled malt whisky, which was stopped in 1928, and the extra spirit still was simply never removed or decommissioned.
