In excellent cosmetic condition and fully working, it measures 45mm in diameter not including the stem. Although unsigned this is clearly a quality instrument weighing just over 400 grams, and probably made by one of the more prominent makers of the day. Level the compass: The next thing you have to do is to firmly position your elbows next to your body, placing the lensatic on the same level as your stomach.

Measuring 8"by 8" by 1½" ( 206mm x 206mm x 39mm), it is a substantial compass, in very good condition, with only some light scratches on the the lid which fastens shut with two brass clasps. This means you’ll either have to carry a portable charger or bring along a few extra batteries. On the other hand, analog compasses don’t require an external source of power. In good condition including its leather case, the only blemish being some scuffing around the edges of the green card dial. This may prove crucial during extreme conditions where you want to save time reading the map without inaccuracies. Best Compasses for Hiking The Best Compass for Hiking UK It has a steel needle which pivots on a gemstone bearing and a folding sight arm which is used in conjunction with the mirror in the lid. If a needle is rubbed on a lodestone or other magnet, the needle becomes magnetized. When it is inserted in a cork or piece of wood, and placed in a bowl of water it becomes a compass. Such devices were universally used as compass until the invention of the box-like compass with a 'dry' pivoting needle sometime around 1300. Compared to other kinds of compasses, a lensatic compass allows you to read the bearings while sighting the objects all at the same time, without changing eye position. It also has the sighting wire, which helps in determining the azimuth more accurately.

Chapter 8: Flight Instruments". Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (FAA-H-8083-25Bed.). Federal Aviation Administration. 2016-08-24. p.26. Archived from the original on 2023-06-20. It's dated 1912 and signed 'E.R. WATTS & SON, LONDON. 1912, No 3646 \ |/ /|\' on the underside and stamped 'VERNER'S PATTERN VI' on the lid.The MK VI is less common and unusual to find in relatively good condition, particularly with its centre paper label completely intact, although the anti slip ring appears to be a later replacement. It is accompanied by a leather case which is in good condition with all stitching intact and has the letters "E.V.B" impressed on one side, and on the other side is written "J R Richardson R.M" in faint pen, which would have been a previous owner, possibly in the Royal Marines. A similar model appears in a 1919 Francis Barker catalogue, where its referred to as a ‘combined altitude instrument and prismatic compass’) The fitted lid and underside is inscribed with an issue number of '365' and doubles as a stand when attached to the base. Dating to the mid 19th century, this English brass cased explorers style compass is marked to the centre of the distinctive floating dial “Spencer & Co, 111 Minories, London.”
