Standing 711 meters tall and much more remote than Bishop and Clerk, not many people make it to the summit which is a shame, because the panoramic views from the top are next level. You can walk to a lot of attractions from the ferry terminal. If you’re on foot take the earliest ferry possible to maximise your time over here. Maria’s Island is a beautiful, engaging, and poignant book set on the Greek Island of Crete and the now uninhabited neighbouring island, Spinalonga. From the 1880s, the Italian entrepreneur Diego Bernacchi set up island enterprises, including silk and wine production and a cement factory, quarrying limestone deposits at the Fossil Cliffs for the raw material. [8] A substantial cement works was built at Darlington in the early 1920s, with a 2 ft gauge tramway [9] linking the quarries to the cement works and a new jetty. At the height of its fortunes in the early 20th century, Darlington had hundreds of residents and several hotels. The design and layout of the company town established by Bernacchi reflected prevailing ideas of paternalism, though archaeological survey found that the workers cottages had been individualised by their inhabitants. [10] By July 1930, all of those ventures had failed for a number of reasons, including the Great Depression, poor quality limestone, and competition from mainland producers who were not burdened with high costs of transport.

Maria Island takes the form of a figure-eight, with the northern section of the island significantly larger than the southern. Both parts of the island have quite rugged relief and they are joined by a tombolo about 3 kilometres (1.9mi) long known as McRaes Isthmus. The highest point, Mount Maria, is in the northern part of the island and stands 711 metres (2,333ft) above sea level. Maria Island has been separated from nearby mainland Tasmania for some 3-4 thousand years. [11] Flora and fauna [ edit ] The island has been identified by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area (IBA) because it supports significant numbers of endangered swift parrots and forty-spotted pardalotes, over 1% of the world population of Pacific gulls, as well as populations of most of Tasmania's endemic bird species. [1] Cape Barren geese are common on the island, as are eastern grey kangaroos, eastern bettongs and other marsupials. Common wombats can be seen almost anywhere. Tasmania's three species of snake are all found on the island: the tiger snake, lowland copperhead and white-lipped snake. Maria shares with Rita the story of how a bacteria illness called Leprosy had such a devastating effect on the community. How it tore families apart and how because it was contagious the Greek government decided that anyone who had the illness, whether they were an adult or a child had to move to Spinalonga to live out their years. The absorbing story of the Cretan village of Plaka and the tiny, deserted island of Spinalonga – Greece’s former leper colony – is told to us by Maria Petrakis, one of the children in the original version of The Island. It is 19.5km from the town of Triabunna, and the only way to get here is by the Maria Island Ferry (or a scenic flight). As a result there is a whole range of incredible native wildlife on the island, such as wombats and Tasmanian devils, and stunning natural landscapes like the sweeping bays, rugged cliffs, and sandy beaches. Maria Island has a rich history. Before the colonial era, Aboriginal people of the Tyreddeme band of the Oyster Bay tribe journeyed regularly to the island and much evidence of their presence remains, particularly around the bays on either side of the island's isthmus. [5] In 1802 the French expedition led by Nicolas Baudin encountered the Aboriginal people of Maria Island, as did the whalers of the early 19th century. René Maugé, the zoologist on Baudin's expedition, was buried on Point Maugé on south Maria Island. This entire island was declared a national park in 1971, which is protected by Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service. In 1642, the island was named by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman after Maria van Diemen (née van Aelst), wife of Anthony van Diemen, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies in Batavia.

The island was named in 1642 by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman after Maria van Diemen (née van Aelst), wife of Anthony van Diemen, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies in Batavia. The island was known as Maria's Isle in the early 19th century. [3]There is one town on Maria Island, called Darlington. It lies near the northern tip of the island. Darlington has several historic buildings and no permanent inhabitants other than a few park rangers. There are no cars other than a few National Parks vehicles. If you really want to get away from the crowds then grab your bike and head to the far tip of south Maria Island. The sandstone cliffs are only accessible at low tide though, so make sure you time your walk out there around the tides rather than the sun. The island’s toughest challenge on foot is its highest peak. Rising 711m above the sea, Mount Maria peers down onto McRaes Isthmus and along Tasmania’s east coast.
