Hobson suggests that Ian's saving grace is that he is a "passionately caring father" [9] and Woodyatt has suggested that Ian is a chameleon, a description he claims former Executive Producer Louise Berridge used to describe the character. Soon he finds out that Steven has returned and has been stalking him, up to the point when Steven ends up holding Ian hostage for several weeks. Steven then brandishes a gun and threatens to kill Ian, before summoning Lucy and Jane over to the place where Ian is being held hostage. Thereupon a struggle ensues over the gun and Steven accidentally shoots Jane in the end, which results in her needing a hysterectomy. Ian forgives Steven for his actions, but a year later discovers that Steven has been gas lighting Lucy to the point of attempting to turn her again Ian. Soon the last straw comes when Ian finds out that Steven had attempted to smoother his grandmother, Pat Evans, to death with a pillow after she had been hospitalised; Ian confronts Steven for what he has done and disowns him, which prompts Steven to leave the square once again. |Speaking about those scenes, soap boss Chris Clenshaw previously said: "I called Adam and told him our plans and said Ian had to be there, and he agreed. It was kind of as simple as that. Ian didn’t make it into the church, but he said his own private goodbye to Dot. So that’s how it came about.
