Does Silica Lower pH?
As the main benefit of silica is increased cellular growth, it is obvious why it is most necessary during the vegetative stage. Plants will make the best use of silica when growing and strengthening their stems and branches. Silicon influences water relations in drought-treated plants: it induces the formation of a silica cuticle double layer under the leaf epidermis which reduces water losses through cuticular transpiration ( Gong et al., 2003). While supplemental silica can be great for plants, it is important not to overuse it. Too much silica can lead to nutrient imbalances and cause other problems. Therefore, growers should follow recommended dosages and monitor their plants' response to silica. Depending on the product you are using, you need to follow the dosage prescribed. During the early stages of plant development, it is advisable to feed them soluble silica at a slow rate and then up the application as plants increase in size and maturity. Mesoporous SNPs were shown to boost the growth, total protein content and photosynthesis of lupin and wheat seedlings and to induce no changes in the activity of antioxidant enzymes ( Sun et al., 2016). Interestingly in this study, the authors observed a shift of 14 cm -1 and 10 cm -1 in the Raman peaks of chlorophyll from wheat and lupin when isolated chloroplasts were incubated with MSNPs suggesting a change in the molecular structure of chlorophyll. This nutrient helps improve cell growth by speeding up the production of cell walls, helping serve as a framework.It also acts like cement for the cells. This allows them to work better and be more effective at their job. All of this adds up to a plant that can grow tissue faster, and thus grow faster. Silicon is an abundant element on Earth and its positive effects on plants make it important in agriculture. The study of the Si-plant binomium has still much to teach us and this is particularly the case for e.g., the cell wall-related mechanisms underlying its prophylactic role under stress. The plant cell wall takes active part in the response to (a)biotic stresses by establishing a signaling cascade toward the cell interior ( Hamann, 2015) and by undergoing a remodeling ( Tenhaken, 2014). It is therefore clear that part of the beneficial effects of Si on plants is linked to direct/indirect effects on the cell wall. Silicon in its elemental form is rarely found on Earth, but, as you can see, silica is found in abundance. Given how common this compound is, and how much of it is found in the ground, it stands to reason that cannabis plants would have a natural kinship with silica. More on this shortly. How is silica formed? It’s best to store silica for weed separately from other nutrients or marijuana fertilizer. It requires an alkaline pH of higher than seven to remain soluble. Only add silica to a nutrient mix right before you apply it. Does silica help weed growth? Seasonal adjustments : Adjust the application frequency during the dormant season, as the plant’s need for silica decreases. During this time, you can reduce applications to once every 1-2 months.
