I think the Yi originally was one of these types of oracles, just a set of symbols, one out of inumerous variations that existed among all major cultures. Then what I think the zhou part brought that was inovative was precisely that structure that was imposed over each symbol, and that allowed for a whole microcosmos of meaning to be unfolded under what was just one basic image.

Thus all oracles, being specialisations, will have their own language but as surface expression, beneath this surface of apparent difference is a realm of sameness.
