"I am very insecure about being a writer", he stated in the book Faces of Fear. "I don't understand why I am so successful. And the longer I stay that way, the better it's going to be, because that's what keeps me on the edge, striving if you like." Nobody True continues the theme of life after death, being narrated by a ghost whose investigation of his own death results in the destruction of his illusions about his life. This is a novel that explores reincarnation and poses the question of what would it be like to have a human mind and recollections whilstexisting in a canine body. Fluke is a charming lead, a mixture of human and canine thoughts, driven by thefear that soon his human thoughts will fade away to nothing. It’s about Fluke discovering other dogs who become friends, all the whileseeing humans in a completely new perspective. But what drives the story is Fluke'sfinding his way home to his wife and daughter and uncovering what reason his life ended so suddenly. Potter, Adam Lee (5 September 2012). Emanuel Levy of Variety stated, "The adventure doesn't pander to kids, though toward the end it gets overly emotional, milking every situation with lengthy reaction shots and cute closeups of Fluke" and "all three adults — Modine, Travis and Stoltz — otherwise accomplished and attractive performers, assume secondary status to the gorgeous dog and his loyal benefactor, Pomeranc." [8] Fluke is a 1995 American fantasy drama film directed by Carlo Carlei from a screenplay by Carlei and James Carrington, based on the 1977 novel of the same name by James Herbert. It stars Matthew Modine as a self-centered businessman who is reincarnated as a dog and attempts to reconnect with his family. Nancy Travis, Eric Stoltz, Jon Polito, and Max Pomeranc appear in supporting roles. With his third novel, the ghost story The Survivor, Herbert used supernatural horror rather than the science fiction horror of his first two books. In Shrine, he explored his Roman Catholic heritage with the story of an apparent miracle which turns out to be something much more sinister. Haunted, the story of a sceptical paranormal investigator taunted by malicious ghosts, began life as a screenplay [13] for the BBC, though this was not the screenplay used in the eventual film version. Its sequels were The Ghosts of Sleath and Ash. [14] Others of Herbert's books, such as Moon, Sepulchre and Portent, are structured as thrillers and include espionage and detective story elements along with the supernatural.

Although the handful of adventures that Fluke (and Rumbo) embark upon are mostly light-hearted in their delivery, they still have a desperate and almost life-threatening undertone. This is where Herbert really plays with the reader’s heartstrings, mixing the loving qualities of the storyline with a single-minded and directional plot. a b c d Holland, Steve (21 March 2013). "James Herbert obituary". Guardian.co.uk. London . Retrieved 24 March 2013. Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly gave the film a grade of "D" and commented, "With the exception of the cheek-pinchable Pomeranc, the cast gives performances as bewildered as the plot is bewildering. There is, though, one other star: The dog is great." [9] Accolades [ edit ] Year Howe, Desson (June 2, 1995). " 'Fluke' ". The Washington Post. Archived from the original on October 4, 2020 . Stealing meat from the butchers, terrorising the pedestrians and relaxing in the shade of the scrap-yard with Rumbo. Everything seems to be falling into place for Fluke. Adaptation Deviation: American-set version of James Herbert novel (which took place in London and southern Britain). Also, he was Nigel Clairemount Nettle, father of Gillian in the book, Thomas P Johnson, father of Brian in the film. Desson Howe of The Washington Post called the film "one of the weirdest, most depressing family films ever made" and wrote that "it's a bizarre hybrid of wet-nosed tear-jerker and adult psychodrama, with a bummer conclusion, and out-there Buddhist-lite themes about life beyond the grave, guaranteed to send kids sobbing into the night." James Herbert was one of Britain's greatest popular novelists and our #1 best-selling writer of chiller fiction. Widely imitated and hugely influential, he wrote 23 novels which have collectively sold over 54 million copies worldwide and been translated into 34 languages. To say I loved this novel is surely an understatement. Having read it when I was a youngster and then later returning to it as a young adult, the impression it left on me is still incredibly vivid even to this day. I remember not wanting to put the novel down. I remember feeling as if I really knew who Fluke was, and that he had somehow become someone close to me. I remember being taken on one hell of an emotional journey, seeing through Fluke’s own eyes as everything that he knows in his life as a dog comes crashing down. He was the subject of a This is Your Life programme in 1995, when he was surprised by Michael Aspel at the London Dungeon. [ citation needed] Reception [ edit ] Caryn James of The New York Times described Fluke as "the kind of pompous movie in which Fluke learns some life lessons and Mr. Modine says in a high-serious voice-over" and stated, "Though it is meant to be whimsical and touching, the film's style is leaden, and its story has more danger than excitement. […] Fluke is too serious for children and too ridiculous for adults." [5] Jerkass: Jeff, at first. Turns out Tom was the real Jerkass who ignored his family, worked days and nights, and refused to develop Jeff's brake system.

Fluke". Rotten Tomatoes. Fandango Media. Archived from the original on August 1, 2023 . Retrieved November 9, 2023. Youngsters as well as adults will get a hell of a lot out of this book. It speaks volumes with its simplistic but powerful storyline. It’s one to cherish, to return to after a number of years, and to one day pass on to your own children. Well, that’s how I feel about it anyway.
