About this deal

Usnea Tincture is a fast and easy topical treatment for mild to moderate Thrush, particularly good for days when there isn't time for a hoof soak. I don't suggest using it for severe to extreme cases. Usnea is a tree lichen that has anti fungal properties and has been used as a medicine for centuries. ( Wikipedia description link ). From googling to high heaven I have found quite a few posts about hoof abscesses but it was a year or so ago and I wondered if anyone has stumbled upon any miracle "cures" For initially treating tough thrush infections, he suggested soaking 3 times a week for a month using the: 4 oz, 1 tsp citric acid, 1 gallon of water. For maintenance, he suggests 3 oz Oxine, 2 tsp citric acid,1 gallon water. This horse’s left front frog is touching the ground, even though his shoe has a two degree wedge built into it:

f. You are solely responsible any consequences, losses, or damages that we may directly or indirectly incur or suffer due to any unauthorized activities conducted by you and you may incur criminal or civil liability for such unauthorized activities. After soaking, DO NOT RINSE OR DRY THE HOOF; cover the hoof with an empty plastic bag and seal the top, alternatively put the hoof into a non-draining hoof boot and allow the vapors to penetrate for a futher 30-60 minutes. For ongoing deep or bad recurring infections repeat the soaking every two to four weeks until signs of improvement.

Step 3. Clean the inner cannula

I guess I can't write an article on white line disease without the mention of anti-fungal (and anti-bacterial) treatments - they can be important. Be sure that any treatment you use does not destroy live tissue at a cellular level - otherwise, you may be contributing to the problem by eating the lesions deeper and creating dead tissue for opportunistic pathogens to feed on. Notable antifungal treatments that tend not to damage live tissue are activated and diluted Oxine AH,White Lightning, Clean Trax, and 30-minute 50/50 apple cider vinegar/water solutions (note: each of these can irritate the skin of isolated horses - start gradually and pay attention. Don't mix any of them stronger than the directions). For horses with sensitive skin, the Oxine, White Lightening and Clean trax can be used with just a small amount in the bottom of a plastic bag with the top of the bag taped tightly around the horse's leg at mid-cannon. The gas emitted from the solutions is effective at disinfecting the foot without a need to soak above the hairline. Thoroughly rinse the leg after soaking. Broad spectrum means it kills a lot of different microbes. Grapefruit seed extract has many constituents like most herbal preparations, so it is very hard for microbes to develop resistance or mutations.I have heard some controversy, but it worked for me If you treat a horse with little or no thrush what are you going to do when he really does have thrush. I don't use anything on feet. If the horse gets thrush I treat it otherwise I just use a wire brush on the soles and wire brush the frog as well.

For deeper infections soak a hoof for 45 minutes (you will be able to deep soak two hooves in the 90 minutes the solution is active) What are your experiences with these products, and with thrush in general? I know that experiences vary, not just in the general hoof care of the horse but stalling and location as well. So for the sake of my experience: Thrush &'WLD' are effectively the same thing. They can be from a range of soil born organisms, fungal or bacterial or otherwise, which are 'opportunistic', meaning they get in when hooves are compromised in some way. Thrush is what it's called when the frog is infected, WLD/seedy toe is when it's in wall material. They are invariably anaerobic bugs, which thrive in warm, damp, airless situations. So unfortunately, 'tropical' often implies 2 of those at least... The barefoot horses which are worked hard, kept in urine free environments and fed in accordance with their needs don't seem to get it. I have seen a good horse get it because they had to stand in pee rather too much, but even then it wasn't awful. Any one of those could also have gone towards causing this I think - as I really do think i've got control of his diet so would like to be able to rule that out as a cause!Posted on Tuesday, Apr 13, 2010 - 8:49 pm: Well...7 years after the last post i am going to guess at the penetration. I bought these very tall soaking boots, and you have to mix it up in the 1 gallon per foot with the clean trax. I let it soak 90 minutes on both front feet. I am wondering if the water is so high in the boot, it is causing the solution to go up into the tubules? Notice the bulge in the heel quarter on this foot combined with the dip in the wall going toward the toe:
