I think the soundbar by itself works fine for most television. I mainly wanted to add some extra punch when watching certain shows/movies and it works well. You are never going to get a full movie theater immersive sound with a soundbar setup, but this helps add some punch for home viewing with a very compact setup. The nearly invisible surrounds don't add much in my opinion--Bose needed to design a wider and more powerful speaker. Buy the surrounds only if you feel compelled to own the entire set but be warned it doesn't have any wow factor like the subwoofer.
