A desperate orphan turned pirate and a rebellious imperial daughter find a connection on the high seas in a world divided by colonialism and threaded with magic. Peter David( w),Bill Fugate( p),Dave Hunt( i). Serpent Teen,vol.1,no.1(1992).Walt Disney Magazine Publishing Group. Evelyn is a noblewoman, but her title and rank don't grant her any special privileges or powers in this story; quite the reverse if anything. The little mermaid agrees to the terms, including the stipulation that she must marry the prince, as failure to do so would result in her turning into seafoam. However, the Sea Witch demands one more thing: the mermaid’s voice.

Captain Lafayette did not respond. Instead, he looked to Evelyn. “Have you ever seen a mermaid before, Lady Hasegawa?” Reese, Kyle (June 11, 2009). "20 Greatest Classic Disney Villains". PopOptiq . Thirdly, the frank and honest discussion of the differences, positives, negatives, and neutrals about living in these different identities on the gender spectrum is so refreshing. a b Oneill, Therese (October 28, 2015). Boone, John; Mullins, Jenna (May 15, 2014). "All of the Disney Villains, Ranked". E!. Entertainment Television, LLC . Retrieved April 23, 2016. In the Disney version, Ursula simply removes the voice. In the fairy tale, the Sea Witch goes to the extent of cutting out the mermaid’s tongue. Ah, fairy tales. Of course, I also loved the characters. Flora/Florian was my favorite; once again, Tokuda-Hall brought in real-world themes and issues with the gender-fluid aspect of this character’s character arc. Flora/Florian also contributes a lot to the debate about morality and right/wrong in this book; which was, simply put, amazing. Honestly, Flora/Florian’s entire self-discovery journey was just great. Customer reviews

While some aspire to emulate Ursula, the powerful and malevolent witch from the Little Mermaid who transforms Ariel into a human (spoiler alert), others simply feel a deep affinity for the sea. In the fourth book Mistress of All Evil: A Tale of the Dark Fairy, Circe and Nanny gather Ursula's remains and give her a burial at sea prior to Maleficent's arrival. Maggie Tokuda-Hall (Also an Octopus) has crafted a brooding, magical adventure with a healthy dose of intrigue. Her prose is delightful, by turns delicate and brutal, as her plot demands. At the heart of this tale about learning when to stand out and when to blend in, lies the importance, imparted by first mate Rake, of "know[ing] your truth, not your story."

Another thing I loved about is how magic works in this world. When we see the witch later in the book, she makes spells by telling stories. And in those, we basically get short stories that sit within the novel. The Pros MT-Hl: There's the craft aspect of it that's necessary to establish stakes in an epic fantasy — a life or death situation. You need to have that aspect of it to make it feel exciting and important. I'm [also] an anxious person and I constantly think about the horrible ways I, or the people I love, could be mortally injured, or die suddenly and violently. It's impossible for me to be imaginative and have there not be some peril, because that's what the landscape of my own imagination looks like. Somebody please throw this book at V.E. Schwab and tell her to take some notes on queer, specifically genderfluid/non-binary representation. After trodding through the first two books of the desert that is the Shades of Magic series, this was like coming upon an oasis for my queer, Indigenous self. And yeah, I'm gonna directly compare Schwab's Lila to Tokuda-Hall's Flora/Florian, so strap in for some education on queer rep from your friendly neighborhood PoC drag king. Sea Witches in Mythology

There’s a lot to love about the characters in The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea, especially because the character work goes so deep for many of them. Lyricist, producer and writer Howard Ashman had originally envisioned Ursula's relationship with King Triton as a soap opera, and thus drew inspiration from soap opera actress Joan Collins. [13] Ursula was originally conceived as Triton's sister, [14] which would have naturally made the character Ariel's aunt, [15] but the idea was ultimately abandoned. [16] However, their blood relationship is still vaguely alluded to when the character mentions a time during which she actually lived in Triton's palace. [17] Clements and Musker had originally intended for Ursula to remain her original size at the end of the film. [18] However, Katzenberg had just recently seen the film Die Hard (1988), which inspired him to request a "bigger" ending for The Little Mermaid, and thus he instructed the writers to have Ursula grow much larger in size during her climactic fight with Ariel and Eric. [18] Voice and music [ edit ] SN: This is a book about survival, and in that way it feels perfect for this current moment, both as an escapist fantasy but also as a hopeful story of human resilience. Can you talk about the role of survival and hope in the book?

Flora disliked her immediately, in the way she disliked all Imperials. On principle. Sure, they were polite enough when one-on-one, but she knew — because she’d seen it — what Imperial kindness truly looked like. a b c Portolan, Daniel (March 9, 2015). This intriguing premise blooms into an enchanting, complex tale that explores politics, piracy and the magic of storytelling itself…Queer and gender nonconforming characters are everywhere, and their normalization within the world of the book is remarkable and praiseworthy. A strikingly original and accomplished debut, The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea reads like an undiscovered classic with impressively modern flair. Reif, Alex (2022-09-08).
