About this deal

I need to be quiet, somewhere, and just let myself settle, like a snow globe. But it’s hard to make people understand that.” (76) Grace is a well-rounded and sympathetic character. She has various interests (horses, wildlife, Doctor Who, My Little Ponies), rides and cares for a horse, has friendships and complex relationships with her family members, and has a good—and sometimes entertainingly snarky—sense of humor. She’s introspective and insightful about how being autistic affects her needs, such as extra recovery time after social interaction and the ability to leave stressful situations. She also has a good sense of how others’ willingness (or refusal) to accommodate those needs affects her ability to deal with everyday life. She also has other issues common to autistic people, including sensory overwhelm, sleep schedule dysregulation, difficulty interpreting others’ imprecise or implicit communication, and difficulty providing other people with the responses and body language they expect. m]y head is full of all the things I have to remember when I’m being a person every day: don’t be rude, don’t stare, don’t look blankly into space when you’re not thinking anything, shut down the noises of everything talking, concentrate, hold it together, don’t have a meltdown…” (101-102) And still reeling from all that, I found myself displaced from the familiar comfort of the halls of public school, where I’d enjoyed tremendous freedom with minimal oversight or accountability, and thrust into the regimented, buttoned-down structure of Jesuit prep school. Overnight, nothing in my life was the same as it had so reliably been. Only a year earlier, I’d had a very clear vision of where everything was headed—an idiotic John Hughes–inspired fantasy of infinite free-range teenage adventures with me and my little gang on the streets of the Bronx, just as life had always been. My father was a Jersey City cop for over 25 years. I was an only child but I was spoiled in a much different way: I was given unlimited access to great films, music & books, via suggestions usually coming from him, that were WAY out of my age group. There are also several incidents where Grace creates or contributes to situations where others are harmed, or narrowly escape harm. In one case, she shoves her sister into a wall after an unrelated argument with other people, because her sister’s “in the way and she’s always so perfect and I hate myself” (97). In another, she makes an unwise decision while trying to impress a friend group, and isn’t able to stop herself in midstream despite knowing it’s a bad idea (a type of executive-function failure that I can relate to). The third incident seemed like a bad decision that a non-autistic teenager could have easily made, and unrelated to her being autistic. It’s interesting how a film can have such impact on one’s life. It seems that ‘State of Grace’ came along at a time when your own life was going through significant upheavals and in it you saw something you identified with and which appealed to your sense, even in your early teens, that your life was changing irrevocably and that nothing would ever be the same again. Er kunnen nog meer sorteeropties zijn, zoals type reiziger, score, etc. Even Hollywood itself was on the cusp of tectonic change, with the unprecedented opening-weekend grosses of 1989’s Batman begetting a new industrial model of all-in, big-budget tentpoles, their size and noise—on the subject of corporate homogenization—slowly but surely crowding out smaller, more thoughtful, more dramatic films. Those kinds of stories, like the mafia of our pop culture itself ( The Sopranos), quietly migrated to the untamed, inconspicuous underground of cable television. I pressed through, though and Grace redeemed her selfish ass a little. But I still don't think Bullet got a chance to shine like he deserved. *salty* Por defecto, los comentarios se ordenan por fecha del comentario y según otros criterios para mostrar los más relevantes, incluidos a título enunciativo el idioma, los que incluyen texto y los que no son anónimos. Franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Game of Thrones have systematically trained audiences to try to “outsmart the narrative,” an engagement strategy I studied in “In the Multiverse of Madness: How Media Mega-Franchises Make Us Their Obedient Servants, Part 1.” Any discussion about those movies must be preceded with a caveat: No spoilers. I wept for Julia, that feeling that you can't relax really because your undivided attention is really needed and you might forget something seemingly small that has bigger consequences. I'd like to give her hugs and tea and cake! Whip-smart, hilarious and unapologetically honest, The State of Grace by Rachael Lucas is a heart-warming story of one girl trying to work out where she fits in, and whether she even wants to. From Goodreads. Be gone, daimon,” the woman in front of Grace snarled, the men next to her moving protectively closer to her sides. Did she seriously just “be gone” me? Like this was an 80s Catholic horror film or something?"

It may just be that general audiences have had enough of these never-ending IPs. I suspect — I hope— there’s a renewed hunger for stories with strong artistic points of view, relatable themes, and cathartic resolution. But I also think that kind of old-school storytelling needs to be consciously reintroduced to a generation raised exclusively on “storyless” fiction (meaning corporate mega-franchises), which is why it falls to the elder generations to share their appreciation for movies like State of Grace with their kids. Because the great thing about a “forgotten” movie is that it’s like an archeological treasure just waiting to be rediscovered. All of that is to say that your blog resonates with me as much as mine resonates with you. And I think that’s because the more honest specificity we put into our writing, the more universally relatable it — and we— become. So that you of all people would stop to say how much you connect with some of these essays is just about the highest compliment I could receive! Thank you — and likewise. These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone. Thank you, Randy, for sharing these stories with us. Your response to this humble blog post is greatly appreciated, sir. I hope someday you do indeed publish a full behind-the-scenes account of the production of the film and how it dovetailed into the bankruptcy of Orion; I imagine, based on the teaser you provided above, it’s a story worth telling. What a lovely book. Really wonderful. Thank you for writing it. I wish I'd had such a book growing up. It would have sat very nicely amongst Anne of green gables, Judy Blume and SE Hinton. Not forgetting the Secret Garden and Noel Streatfeilds Painted Garden. Grace’s feelings eventually come to a head in an event that shakes her family, and leaves them all trying to work out what they want, and how they ended up in this situation. Throughout, the focus is kept on Grace’s experience of the world, rather than others’ experience of Grace—as it should be. This is particularly evident in her commentary on how other people treat her, which includes her frustration with not being consulted on important decisions, and not being believed or asked about her experiences:

We establish who the other two bonds will be and get their POV. That was interesting and I can’t wait for them all to be together. In real life, autistic people sometimes need more tolerance for mistakes because we have difficulty regulating our behavior in certain situations, or because we don’t always read situations well. And there are things it isn’t realistic to expect us to do—for example, we can’t stop a meltdown in midstream. It’s important to not try to make us change things about ourselves we can’t change, and it’s also important to recognize that we can (and should, and generally want to) figure out why we made avoidable mistakes, so we can avoid making them again. I was reading The Westies and Wiseguy when everyone else in my class was reading Goosebumps novels. In the five years since I first published this essay, I’ve only come to see with greater clarity how the kinds of closed-ended, character-driven, street-level films I admired as a young adult — State of Grace foremost among them — simply no longer exist. They’ve been stamped out of existence by the mega-franchise, the branded IP. Such is what happened when Hollywood was subsumed by nerd culture.

Bespaar tijd, bespaar geld!

Grace has Asperger's and her own way of looking at the world. She's got a horse and a best friend who understand her, and that's pretty much all she needs. But when Grace kisses Gabe and things start to change at home, the world doesn't make much sense to her any more. State of Grace was a particular favorite, and I even managed to score a copy of the promotional one-sheet from my local video shop in the Bronx when they were done with it, which hung in my bedroom throughout high school. The movie was my introduction to newly minted Oscar-winner Gary Oldman, and he delivers a searing, unsettling, heartbreaking performance that made me a fan for life. But by the mid-nineties, my secondhand VHS of Grace had gotten misplaced, and given the scarcity of the film’s availability, I haven’t had occasion—despite trying in 2016 for that best–of–St. Patty’s post—to see it since. Side note: I’ve never seen a movie that captures gun play better than State of Grace. I don’t know if it’s in the direction, cinematography, sound design or all of the above. Whatever the case, it ain’t CGI, and you could teach a master class on the film’s climax alone. Action directors everywhere should take note. lenguaje ofensivo, sexual, discriminatorio, amenazante, que incite al odio o de contenido violento;
