I've had mine for almost two years now but the one I have now is my second one as the first broke. Good thing it was still under warranty so it was replaced. It might just be the first one was from a bad batch because the second one was more durable. Upright vs. handheld: There are two main types of electric can openers: For upright and under-counter models, you simply attach the can; for handheld ones, you place the opener on the can and press or hold a lever or button to start the opening process. How we tested

My only concern is that this unit cuts through the body of the can, just UNDER the rolled seam. I was hoping this unit would be the sort that cuts INTO the seam, creating a re-usable lid and leavbing rolled metal on both the can and lid. Alas, not to be. Though the resulting can rim is smooth and dull, not something you'll cut yourself on easily, it isn't the greatest of methods. No danger as far as my tests showed, but still a *slight* let-down from optimum expectations.

Unlike some we tested, the magnet that grabs the tin lid also works well, meaning that you don't have to go dipping into the can with your fingers to get the lid out. A must-have kitchenware appliance! Opening a can has never been easier! Whether it be a tin of beans, tomato sauce or cherry pie filling, simply place the fully-automatic can opener on the tin, press the button and the can opener does all the work for you. By ingeniously cutting from the side of the can, a clever built-in magnet ensures the lid stays put once it’s removed, delivering mess free opening. Excellent for both right and left-handed users, and an ideal gift for the elderly, disabled or anyone suffering RSI or Arthritis. Zyliss and Kitchen Mama are AA battery operated can openers that cut from the side of the can below the rim . If you are looking for a battery operated can opener that is safe and sanitary (creates smooth edge on the lid and doesn’t touch the food), any of these openers is a good choice. The other common annoyance is that the opener “eats batteries” (so you need to keep lots of AA batteries handy). Though this is avoidable with a Walk-and Cut can opener that works on rechargeable battery.The biggest complaint is that this type of gadget is not able to cut the can or it takes going around the can with the opener 2-3 times to complete the task. After replacing the batteries, following use of the stall release screw or the reverse button, press and hold the reverse button and can detect switch together until the Can Opener resets to its start position. Keep your fingers away from the cutter blade and drive wheel to prevent injury. Auto-start with pressing button and auto-shut off after use. Most effortless way to open cans, easy to use and suitable for all ages.

Operation is a breeze, pop onto a can, press button, let go and watch it wiggle around the rim. Works on almost any sized can, and in fact from looking at the unit, it only becomes MORE effective, the larger the can... we weren't able to test this, since we didn't have any catering-sized cans available on short notice, but the theory looks promising. GREAT GIFT – This could be a great gift to anybody, especially for left-handed users, and an ideal gift for the elderly, disabled or anyone suffering with RSI or Arthritis. Safety concerns: Fully concealed cutter leaves a smooth edge on the lid and top of the can, increase safety and protect users from accidental cuts. Cans with heavy seams, odd shapes or uneven rims may stall the Can Opener. If this happens, follow above procedure to release the can. Start the cutting action just beyond any minor bump or dent in the can.
