a b c d Sansom, Ian (20 November 2013). "The quiet commissaire: the extraordinary ordinariness of Maigret". New Statesman. Archived from the original on 3 December 2020 . Retrieved 7 January 2020. Between 1931 and 1972, 75 novels [3] and 28 short stories [4] about Maigret were published, starting with Pietr-le-Letton (" The Strange Case of Peter the Lett") and concluding with Maigret et Monsieur Charles (" Maigret and Monsieur Charles"). With the creation of Maigret, Simenon renewed the detective novel genre. The novels and stories have been translated into more than 50 languages. [4]

Recurring characters in the series include Maigret's wife Louise (usually referred to simply as Madame Maigret) [7] and in particular "The Faithful Four", a group consisting of his four loyal police colleagues (Sgt./Inspector Lucas, Janvier, Lapointe, and Torrence [7]).Murielle Wenger, Stephen Trussel Maigret's World: A Reader's Companion to Simenon's Famous Detective, McFarland 2017, p.11 List of Penguin Reissues". At the age of 30 he entered the Homicide Squad and later, nearing his forties, became chief inspector of the squad. It is mentioned that Maigret retired when in his mid-fifties, which gave him over 30 years of experience in the police. [10] M is ready to drop the case, when he stops in at the hardware store, and learns that Serre had bought another pane, two days later, the day after the break in. From there on it becomes a battle between the two heavyweights, Serre being actually taller, broader and heavier than M. In the end, after having the house searched and Serre interrogated for hours, M realizes that it was the mother, who had no doubt poisoned her husband and Serre's former wife, using atropine, fatal to those with weak hearts, and that Maria had apparently realized she'd been given the drug, and was shot when she started to call the police, apparently by the mother, who is sent to prison, along with Serre, who serves two years in Fresnes as an accessory, having disposed of the body. In 1950, Charles Laughton played the first English-language Maigret in The Man on the Eiffel Tower, [1] adapted from the 1931 novel A Battle of Nerves. The film co-starred Franchot Tone, Burgess Meredith, and Wilfrid Hyde-White.

The series starred Rupert Davies as the Police Judiciaire detective Commissaire Jules Maigret, who took up the role in 1960 after Basil Sydney, who had played Maigret in the pilot episode, was unable to continue. It's a fine translation of the work of a true master and very warmly recommended. This is an ongoing attempt at a comprehensive listing of the Penguin Maigret editions/printings, with cover images. Books with years shown in green are volumes I don't have, and so are unconfirmed. Apparently all but five* of the Maigrets have been issued in Penguin editions.

Granada Television produced an adaptation of Maigret for ITV in 1992 and 1993 in which Michael Gambon starred as Maigret; there were 12 adaptations in the two series. An earlier version, Maigret (1988) on ITV cast Richard Harris in the lead role.

The choice of Davies to play Maigret was enthusiastically approved by Simenon himself. Remembering the role in a 1964 interview Davies said "When Andrew Osborn, the producer of the show, offered me the part on Good Friday in 1960, I knew very little about Maigret. I knew he was a famous French fictional detective, but that was all." Rather than read the books to get the feel for the character, Davies thought it would be better to meet Maigret's creator and hear from him how he saw the character. The BBC agreed and a meeting was arranged between Davies and Simenon in Lausanne. [4] On Sunday, February 9, 1969, BBC One London aired Maigret at Bay as part of its series BBC Play of the Month. [8] This feature-length movie was based on the 1964 novel Maigret Defends Himself ( Maigret se défend), and featured Rupert Davies, Helen Shingler, and Neville Jason reprising their series roles of Commissaire Maigret, Madame Maigret, and Lapointe, respectively. The programme was filmed in Budapest [5] which doubled for post-WWII France. [1] Airing in two seasons, each of the episodes was based on a single book. The series covered only 12 of Georges Simenon's 75 novels and 28 short stories about the detective. [3] Cast [ edit ] There have been numerous incarnations of Maigret on the small screen all around the world. He has been portrayed by French, British, Irish, Austrian, German, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, and Russian actors. A French version, Les Enquêtes du Commissaire Maigret, starred Jean Richard in 88 episodes between 1967 and 1990; [19] however, Simenon himself is said to have disliked Richard's Maigret because he would not take his hat off when entering a room. [20] Later, Bruno Cremer played the character in 54 adaptations between 1991 and 2005. In 1990-1991, abridgments of some of the novels (including "Madame Maigret's Case," "Maigret and the Tavern by the Seine," and "Maigret in Montmartre") were serialized in daily one-minute installments on WNCN, a classical music station in New York City. They were read every night at midnight in a radio program called the " H.B.J. Midnight Murder Mystery Minute." [29] Comics [ edit ]
