I had so many earthly dreams for you, Gloria. We were going to spend each day together learning and cuddling. All the books we were going to read, the walks with the dogs, the playing, and memories we were going to make. I don’t get those things with you, but I hope you are in heaven growing and rejoicing. I hope your great grandparents are telling you all about your daddy and I when were were little. Your name means “beautiful” and that is exactly what you are, beautiful inside and out. Your smile brings me overwhelming joy. Your sweetness melts my heart. And your beauty lights my world.I lift her up to you, asking for your healing touch and comfort to envelop her. A constant theme throughout most of the poems and messages on this list is the idea that a daughter isn’t truly gone if you believe she is in Heaven. Yesterday Kim’s mama made us gather around and listen for over an hour how her daughter graduated college with honors although she had mononucleosis for two semesters. Help me to be a supportive and loving presence in her life, to listen with empathy, and to offer the encouragement she needs. I want you to be more than a face that they see in old photo albums or in a frame hanging on the wall. More than a name that they read in old Christmas cards. More than a mysterious someone who left this world before they entered it. I want them to know the little things that made you, you. I know you love me and please know how much I love you too. I couldn’t ask for a better parent to share my life with. The loss of you made me strong. I became an independent young woman who wanted to do it all on her own. I love that I became strong, but I hate that I had to lose you to do it. I hope and pray my children become strong. I hope and pray they don’t have to lose me to become that way. I will mold them. Give them tasks to make them strong. I don’t want to leave them to strengthen them. There must be another way. I will find it. I often pray that you are able to know some of my joys.
