About this deal

In Zombie 15’, all of the adults have turned into zombies! All that’s left are a handful of 15-year-old kids and they have about 15 minutes before they’re eaten alive. Resident Evil 2: The Board Game is a cooperative, zombie-filled experience that can be devastatingly difficult to play if you don’t work together. The designers faithfully recreated the same atmosphere, which translates extremely well to the tabletop. What We Liked: If Plants v. Zombies was a math game, Fairway’s pretty sure that his kids would be doing college-level differential equations. But alas, it’s not. Enter City of Zombies: The Board Game. Marching zombie hoards are threatening your zombie-fighting, kid heroes. Their only weapon: math. Find out if Fairway solved this one. Each character gets a different skill set and can only use specific equipment. The overall game is very faithful to the original, giving players a very cool nostalgic feeling during gameplay. You’ll notice a lot of mechanics attempt to mimic that same feeling you had when you first played Resident Evil 2. The game is suitable for all ages and abilities, and can be played in as little as 15 minutes (in the shorter version). The key game mechanics involve manipulating the numbers rolled on the dice via combinations of mathematical functions (from basic addition and subtraction through to squaring and cube rooting) to hit the exact numbers on the encroaching zombie cards - you need a precise head shot to take them out! As a co-op game, the difficulty can be tailored to suit the skills of the players, and supports groups of mixed abilities well.

Every clean corner of City of Horror's design fosters tension and talking, ultimately powering the game, making it thrum to life on your kitchen table. We've already mentioned the secret cards that both represent a dwindling resource (tension) and engender love and hate (talking), but they can also be played at any time at all, switching up the puzzle (tension) and enabling them to take a role as you canvass your friends for votes (talking). The thematic elements in Dead of Winter are top-notch. Not only do you have to contend with the flesh-eating zombies but the unforgiving elements of winter as well. Players begin on a road trip to find safety on the other side of the country. Whether they get there or whether it’s actually safer is entirely up for debate. If you do manage to actually open the door, the game completely flips and enters a final showdown with a boss. It’s either Dr. Mortimer himself or Lisa Mortimer. Every game is random so you’ll never quite know how the showdown will go. The rulebooks can be intimidating but there’s so much zombie goodness in this box that I highly urge you to give it a try. What We Liked: The only problem, you ask? There’s only room for one more person in the chopper. That’s right, this is a free-for-all brawl. No cooperative, let’s be friends and build a world together, here. Every man, woman, and child is on their own. What We Liked: As it’s a game of strategy, the dice bring a bit of randomness to the game, so you can’t be sure your strategy will play out the way you plan. But it does keep you on your toes. Also, the box says playing time is 180 minutes, but I’d put at least a few hours aside.

Zpocalypse is a fun mix of strategic decisions, campy scenarios, pre-combat strategy, and of course, hordes of zombies. It’s also cool that you can play this game cooperatively or competitively. What Could Be Better: Now if you’ve read through this and thought, “I thought you said this was hard?” I have some news for you. Players are survivors hiding in a cabin in the woods and must use everything at their disposal to defend the cabin before the zombies rip through the walls and eat their tasty brains.Players begin together at the safe house and attempt to make it to the helicopter waiting for them to escape. Rise of the Zombies is primarily card-based and the locations will be cards played by other player characters. The rulebook is… rough. There’s a lot of ambiguity in the core rulebook but fortunately, they’re a company that truly likes making games and seem to be in the industry for the long haul. Some of the tokens will be good for you and others will be a detriment. It’s like finding a small child on the side of the road during the apocalypse. Do you stop and save it? Will it help you out later down the road or will it get you killed?
