About this deal

I enjoyed the watercolour illustrations, which felt even more appropriate when I learned that’s the medium Enola’s mother uses. Segunda aclaración: Ví la película hace unos meses y no me gustó NADA. Pero hoy estamos hablando de la novela gráfica y no de la película. Determined to find the missing porter, Enola travels to the rough part of London where the boys live and starts searching Aldgate Pump area for the missing boy. When she finds the missing buttons - but not the boy - she decides that drastic action is essential if she's to save the missing boy.

This book collects the first three graphic novels of the first three original novels in this series, and I had to work out whether that was because they were wonderful, or because Netflix, or because they were, well, cheap to reprint. It took some years before these came out in the original French, so was the source that great, when they didn't seem as urgently produced as some books you'd care to think of? Well, the first story is slightly ungainly, in that it has to set the scene and build the world, and then divert to a completely different case. Enola is abandoned on her birthday by her mother, so sends for her older brothers, long absent from the household, to work out why. They fail but she still aspires to follow in their brainbox ways and solve the case for herself – all until she learns of a missing aristocratic lad, that is. Book Genre: Adventure, Childrens, Fiction, Historical, Historical Fiction, Historical Mystery, Juvenile, Middle Grade, Mystery, Young Adult Here are some of the historic comments that the author uses when recalling the worker’s marches in London of those days:Utichi, Joe (September 22, 2020). "Millie Bobby Brown & Harry Bradbeer On Crafting A Modern Superheroine In The Victorian-Era 'Enola Holmes' – Q&A". Deadline Hollywood. Archived from the original on 2020-09-30 . Retrieved October 10, 2020. The story development is quite abrupt at times. For instance, when Enola first leaves her house, it is only to find her mother. Why then would she abandon that search midway and go looking for another missing boy instead? It seemed silly. Enola tries to find Lady Cecily Alistair, who disappeared from her bedroom. Enola, after disguising herself, talks to Lady Cecily's family, who think she has run off with the son of a tradesman. Enola finds some strange paintings that make her doubt that notion, and goes to find their daughter. The Enola Holmes Mysteries has been classified as an example of neo-Victorian literature for young adults, in part due to the author's use of Victorian woman's clothes as a method to show female empowerment through the main character. [9] [10] According to Amy Montz, Nancy Springer rewrites the "social and personal expectations for fashion". [9] :91 For Montz, the corset is one of the main pieces of clothing for Victorian era stories, as "it is both public and private, masculine and feminine, utilitarian and ornamental, necessary and reviled." [9] :92 In the Enola Holmes series, the corset is a piece of "protection, [...] masquerade [...] and storage space," and is highlighted throughout the various books. [9] :97

Along with great stories, the art in "Enola" is stunning! I believe the artist used markers to achieve their style, but the effect is more like a stylized watercolor. The story flows well from panel to panel with bright splashes, and I was entertained enough to read all three in one sitting. Thank you so much to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the opportunity to read this graphic novel. The length is just right for younger middle-grade readers.

The story itself is somewhat similar as well - this time it’s the daughter (not son) of an aristocratic family who disappeared and Enola bumbling investigates. Neither the investigation nor its outcome were very interesting to read for me and don’t get me started on “mesmerism”... Maneron, Philippe. "Les enquêtes d'Enola Holmes - BD, informations, cotes". Bedetheque.com (in French). Remember Enola being all like "I'm not religious cause I read Darwin and I'm smart"? And how the book has told us time and again that spirtual stuff is nonsense? Yeah, forget that, the villain hypnotises their victims. That's literally how he does his crimes. Just like the case of the Left-Handed Lady. Even though we only got to meet the girl near the end of the story, we got a heartbreaking image of her life. And therefore we also got a heartbreaking image of the life Enola would have if Mycroft would get what he wants. The contrast between the Enola we see and the life she knows she should have is huge. And therefore I'd say that this book is not so much about the case, but more a very well done history lesson. Moore, Kasey (April 22, 2021). " 'Enola Holmes 2' Reportedly In Development at Netflix, Brown & Cavill to Return". What's on Netflix . Retrieved April 22, 2021.

Nevertheless, not all was bad in either novel so, if you liked the first instalment in this series, you’re likely to enjoy this one just as much. Or, in my case, not that much.

The book includes some serious topics within its content, such as women’s suffrage, societal compulsions about ‘proper’ women’s behaviour and appearance, poverty, class discrimination, and so on. It is in bad taste for people to parade their insolent starvation in the face of the rich and trading portions of the town. They should have starved in their garrets. Edgar® Nominees". TheEdgars.com. Before she leaves for London, she discovers that her mother has left her a notebook with secret codes about flowers and also a considerable amount of money; hidden away from the allowances that Mycroft had been providing.
