About this deal

There are some versions that say that Diego helped her. That…in the family is a taboo. Nobody talks about that. Kahlo’s health issues became nearly all-consuming in 1950. After being diagnosed with gangrene in her right foot, Kahlo spent nine months in the hospital and had several operations during this time. She continued to paint and support political causes despite having limited mobility. In 1953, part of Kahlo’s right leg was amputated to stop the spread of gangrene.

Featuring Lopez vs Lopez, The Real Housewives of Miami, Leguizamo Does America, Messi, The Mask of Zorro, Fast X, Enough, Machete, Endgame, Superstore, and other TV and film titles; channels including Telemundo al Dia; soccer; telenovelas; horror; women in film; and more. And a new exhibition James Tylor: Turrangka… In The Shadows at UNSW Galleries, which explores the loss of culture and examines histories of colonisation and their profound impact on Indigenous cultures (12 May – 30 July, free). Less than a month later, I found myself in a studio in Glasgow ‘being Frida Kahlo’. It sounds cheesy but it was all very unreal. The world is small – and I was in the right place at the right time. UNSW Galleries has a bumper mid-year program, with highlights including David Sequeira: History & Infinity and Renee So: Provenance (18 August – 19 November, free).A highlight for March is the return of Melbourne Now at NGV Australia for its second edition. Celebrating new and ambitious local art and design across a range of contemporary disciplines, including fashion and jewellery, painting, sculpture, architecture, ceramics, video, performance, printmaking and publishing, it will include 200-plus Victoria-based artists, including 60 new commissions (24 March – 20 August, free). About a week after her 47th birthday, Kahlo died on July 13, 1954, at her beloved Blue House. There has been some speculation regarding the nature of her death. It was reported to be caused by a pulmonary embolism, but there have also been stories about a possible suicide.

If you are in Victoria, then Tamara Dean’s exhibition About face: are you a boy or a girl? at Monash Art Gallery (19 January – 19 February) comprises 11 portraits of sitters who each have been described or identify as androgynous. They are shown alongside Lebanon born/Melbourne-based artist Ayman Kaake’s portraits of a diasporic life, in Exulansis. While at school, Kahlo hung out with a group of politically and intellectually like-minded students. Becoming more politically active, Kahlo joined the Young Communist League and the Mexican Communist Party. Frida Kahlo's Accident

After Kahlo’s death, the feminist movement of the 1970s led to renewed interest in her life and work, as Kahlo was viewed by many as an icon of female creativity. Frida Kahlo's Most Famous Paintings Hayden Herrera’s 1983 book on Kahlo, Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo, helped to stir up interest in the artist. The biographical work covers Kahlo’s childhood, accident, artistic career, marriage to Diego Rivera, association with the communist party and love affairs. One not to be missed in Queensland, is the exhibition Looking Out, Looking In at QAGOGA, (11 March – 6 August, free). It explores the genre of the self-portrait, a distinct form of portraiture. After staying at the Red Cross Hospital in Mexico City for several weeks, Kahlo returned home to recuperate further. She began painting during her recovery and finished her first self-portrait the following year, which she gave to Gómez Arias. Frida Kahlo's Marriage to Diego RiveraWithin months of marrying Kahlo, Rivera was having affairs. Most hurtfully to Kahlo, he ended up having a relationship with her younger sister, Cristina, with whom she was very close.

On September 17, 1925, Kahlo and Alejandro Gómez Arias, a school friend with whom she was romantically involved, were traveling together on a bus when the vehicle collided with a streetcar. As a result of the collision, Kahlo was impaled by a steel handrail, which went into her hip and came out the other side. She suffered several serious injuries as a result, including fractures in her spine and pelvis. Kahlo reconnected with Rivera in 1928. He encouraged her artwork, and the two began a relationship. During their early years together, Kahlo often followed Rivera based on where the commissions that Rivera received were. In 1930, they lived in San Francisco, California. They then went to New York City for Rivera’s show at the Museum of Modern Art and later moved to Detroit for Rivera’s commission with the Detroit Institute of Arts. A sure highlight for September will be the solo exhibition by Laotian-Australian artist Savanhdary Vongpoothorn, which spans over two decades of practice and premieres a large-scale kinetic wall based sculpture at Campbelltown Art Centre (4 September – 15 October). Vongpoothorn’s work interweaves Lao cultural references with Australian and other cultural influences: from Australian Aboriginal art to Scottish tartans, to Indian miniatures and now to Japanese Buddhism. Aldo worth a nod, is the exhibition 100 faces: the Harris, Rosenthal and MGA Collections(Monash University). Through the lens of over 50 international and Australian artists, 100 faces brings together three significant photographic collections to explore the portrait in its many forms, as well as what it means to build a collection of faces, both publicly and privately (4 March – 28 May, free). Including La Llorona, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, In the Heights, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Selena, Alive, Desperado, Overboard, City of God, Evita, The 33, The Mambo Kings, and more.

An art historian, he paints a sad picture of Kahlo’s final days and claims that the persistent rumour that his grandfather may have helped his wife die might have some substance.
