About this deal

Since 2007, the Sumo watches used the 6R15, and whilst this proved to be a trusted, sturdy, and reliable workhorse movement, Seiko decided it was time for an upgrade for this watch and therefore, it is powered by the latest version, the 6R35. This movement is still the same base but has been improved and refined. The new Seiko Sumo – or Prospex Diver 200m SPB103J1 – isn’t a complete departure from the older model and keeps most of the attributes found on the SBDC031. Consider this new version as an update, with multiple improvements and slight visual evolutions, rather than an entirely new watch. All in all, the fundamentals are still present but the technical side has been improved, for a better owner experience. In the same vein as what’s been done in 2019, as well as what we’ve seen on the King Samurai and King Turtle, Seiko this year once again adds another layer of high-end materials to one of its emblematic watches. The previous Sumo already started with a sapphire crystal. The 2022 Seiko Sumo focus on the resistance of all external parts, with new materials, as well as its looks, with new colours and dials.

As a dive watch should, the SPB103j1 offers great legibility. It has large hour markers and hands which provide excellent contrast against the green dial. The dial is definitely the highlight of this watch as it has a lovely vibrant green color with a beautiful sunburst brushed finish. Due to the sunburst effect of the dial, it reflects the sunlight beautifully, and changes look from a fir green to a striking bright emerald color. We understand the importance of sizing the length of your watch bracelet or strap to provide the perfect fit. Our simple to use watch sizing guide allows you to measure the size of your wrist from the comfort of your own home.Watch sizing can only be generally carried out on watches with metal bracelets, steel, titanium, gold, etc. The Seiko Sumo is also known as the MM200, which stands for ”Marinemaster 200” because of the similarities with the much more expensive SLA021J1 known as the real MarineMaster ”MM300”. This truly is a great watch for the money and is a perfect entry-level professional Divers watch, Let’s have a deeper understanding of why that is so, and go into detail about theSeiko Prospex Sumo SPB101J1 Automatic Watch. As I was expecting, being a Seiko long-time lover, the overall quality of this piece is outstanding. The quality-to-price ratio is pretty high and it seems like this Seiko belongs to an upper category.

There are some updates though, mainly for the bezel and the dial. First, the still bezel retains its coin-edge profile and is still unidirectional with a 60-minute scale. Yet, you’ll notice that the insert has new fonts, without the extended “fat” numerals. It does, however, retain its internal facet. The second evolution regards the crystal. Previously made in mineral “Hardlex” glass, Seiko fits its new Sumo SPB103J1 with a sapphire crystal. The bracelet is very beautifully finished and feels solid. Generally, affordable watches tend to compromise on the bracelet the most and have things like folded links and hollow end links which results in the impression of poor finish, but with this bracelet, Seiko shows that you actually get your money’s worth. Today, we sat down to take a look at the new Seiko Sumo Prospex Diver at Baselworld 2019: an update to a fan favorite. Overall, the dial is very well executed and manages to stay true to the Sumo design, whilst adding a very vibrant colorful touch. The lime on this watch is great and glows brightly for many hours, which we expect in a dive watch. The Sumo case is a piece of art with all its mix of brushed and polished surfaces. The detail of the rotating bezel entering the case is stunning. At its very edge, closest to the crystal, it is sloped. This means the bezel sits taller than the actual crystal, which keeps it protected and minimizes the risk of getting scratches on it. Speaking of the crystal, this watch is equipped with a sapphire crystal. This is something that the predecessor did not have. A big improvement indeed. Tuna, Samurai, Alpinist, Turtle, and many more… There are dozens of emblematic watches with Seiko‘s logo printed on their dials. Many are part of the Prospex range, dedicated to dive watches and professionally-speced models in general. The collection has been largely revamped recently, with many of the classic models updated and upgraded with more resistant materials and better execution – think about the King Samurai, the King Turtle or the new Shogun. Slightly overlooked recently, it’s now time for the Sumo to resurface, with new editions with revised materials and cool design elements. Here are the Seiko Sumo Prospex Diver 200m SPB321J1 & SPB323J1. An emblematic model from 2007 The Seiko Prospex Sumo is powered by Seiko’s 6R35 automatic movement, which provides a power reserve of up to 70 hours. The movement is accurate and reliable, and has been tested to meet Seiko’s high standards for precision and durability. When purchasing a watch which has a metal bracelet with adjustable links, we will gladly adjust the watch bracelet to fit your wrist before sending the watch to you - free of charge!

The only downside for me is the pins and collars system for the bracelet links. I fitted the bracelet myself for my wrist and it was quite a battle. If you are looking for a professional dive watch that can do all of that, and have a seriously sporty presence on the wrist, the SPB103j1 ”Sumo” may just be the watch for you. The movement is perhaps the biggest difference going from Seiko’s 14-year-old 6R15 to the new in-house caliber 6R35. The movement is automatic with a central rotor and offers a power reserve of 70 hours, which is a huge improvement of 20 hours from the 6R15. This robust and durable movement gives makes this SeikoSPB101J1 a greatwatch in this price class. The movement beats at a 3Hz frequency making 21.600 beats per hour. The Prospex in the name stands for ”Professional specifications” and simply means that the watch is built according to the needs and wants of professionals. These watches are made to handle seriously harsh conditions, including those that professionals subject them too.
