About this deal

The Fabergé egg which is stolen was made in 1898 and is entitled 'Lilies of the Valley', although its name not mentioned in the film. The egg contains a model of the imperial state coach.

Reread this book after such a long time. This was my first brush with the iconic British spy in a book written by the creator, Ian Fleming. I had read a Bond novel by John Gardener earlier though. Dr. No (1962) • From Russia with Love (1963) • Goldfinger (1964) • Thunderball (1965) • You Only Live Twice (1967) • Diamonds Are Forever (1971) After being absent in For Your Eyes Only due to tax problems, John Barry returned to do his ninth Bond score. [26] Barry made frequent references to the "James Bond Theme" to reinforce Octopussy as the official Bond film, given that the motif could not be featured in Never Say Never Again, and opted to include only subtle references to the music of India, avoiding instruments such as the sitar for feeling that authentic music "didn't work dramatically". He also wrote opening theme " All Time High" with lyricist Tim Rice. "All Time High", sung by Rita Coolidge, is one of seven musical themes in the James Bond series whose song titles do not refer to the film's title. "All Time High" spent four weeks at number one on the United States' Adult Contemporary singles chart and reached number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100. [25] Moore’s initial three-picture deal had expired and he now worked on a film-by-film basis. Every Bond film, it seemed, could be Roger’s last. But it was all part of an ongoing game between Moore and producer Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli – leverage for Moore to negotiate. “I must have been quite naïve,” says Glen. “Cubby was a great gambler and Roger wasn’t bad at it, either.” Moore, Roger (2012). Bond on Bond: The Ultimate Book on 50 Years of Bond Movies. Lyons Press. p.278. ISBN 978-1843178859.Lindner, Christoph (2009). The James Bond Phenomenon: a Critical Reader. Manchester University Press. ISBN 978-0-7190-6541-5. But it wasn’t only Never Say Never Again that bothered Cubby. Fraser, writing in his memoir, recalled a tense moment when Moore was offered a cameo in a non-related thriller. “I think [Cubby] felt it would somehow tarnish the Bond image,” wrote Fraser. “Roger listened politely, and then said gently: ‘But Cubby, I’ve got to keep the cars filled up.’” The pre-title sequence is unrelated to the rest of the film, involving James Bond's mission to destroy technology which has fallen into the hands of an unnamed Latin American country, and features him flying an ultralight aircraft. Following For Your Eyes Only, Roger Moore had expressed a desire to retire from the role of James Bond. His original contract had been for three films ( Live and Let Die in 1973, The Man with the Golden Gun in 1974 and The Spy Who Loved Me in 1977) which was fulfilled. Moore's following two films ( Moonraker in 1979 and For Your Eyes Only in 1981) were negotiated on a film-by-film basis. Given his reluctance to return for Octopussy, the producers engaged in a semi-public quest for the next Bond, with Timothy Dalton and Lewis Collins [5] being suggested as a replacement and screen tests carried out with Michael Billington, Oliver Tobias, and American actor James Brolin. [6] However, when rival Bond production Never Say Never Again was announced, the producers persuaded Moore to continue in the role as it was thought the established actor would fare better against former Bond Sean Connery. [9] It has been reported that Brolin had actually been hired and was on the point of moving to London to begin work on Octopussy, while Broccoli refused to dispute Tobias's public statements that he was about to be cast as Bond. Best Bit: Q in that hot air balloon on sentimental grounds. The train fight should probably take it. Octopussy". The Numbers. Nash Information Services, LLC. In summary, the Octopussy ensemble is an alchemical concoction of stars, daredevils, and acrobats. Despite initial stumbles with casting its hero, the end result is a cadre of luminous talents, each pouring their essence into a Bond movie that’s as kaleidoscopic and silly as it is unforgettable. Octopussy also has the most sustained action of perhaps any Bond film: from the whiplash-inducing Acrostar jet sequence and high-speed tuk-tuk chase, to Bond running across a moving train and fighting atop a plane thousands of feet in the air.Canby, Vincent (10 June 1983). The model used in the movie is the Seiko G757-5020 (often mistaken for the G757-5000, which had a rubber strap instead of the metal one clearly seen in the movie). Earlier in Khan's palace and later in Octopussy's palace, Bond finds out that Orlov has been supplying Khan with priceless Soviet treasures, replacing them with replicas while Khan has been smuggling the real versions into the West via Octopussy's circus troupe. Orlov is planning to meet Khan at Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) in East Germany, where the circus is scheduled to perform.

In these stories you will get to accompany Bond on his missions across the globe: Jamaica, West Berlin and London. Enter the world of espionage, spies, traitors and assassins. I decided to read this in light of recent news that all of Ian Fleming's works are to be rewritten for these more sensitive times. I must have bought it more than a decade ago. Octopussy is also the first film to feature Robert Brown as M, following the death of Bernard Lee in 1981. Brown was recommended by Moore, who had known him since both worked in the series Ivanhoe. [14] Brown had previously played Admiral Hargreaves in The Spy Who Loved Me, six years earlier. [15]top secret Bond locations around Britain". The Telegraph. 28 October 2015. It certainly wasn’t the time to debut a new 007. Never Say Never Again was ready to go into production too, the result of a decades-long battle over the rights of Thunderball. Never Say Never Again was “unofficial” – as in, not made by Broccoli’s EON Productions, the Bond producers since 1962’s Dr No – but the rogue film had a not-so-secret weapon in Connery, who was lured out of Double-O retirement after 12 years. Only Roger,” the dissenters sigh. “Yes!” cry the faithful. “Only Roger! Only Roger Moore could disarm a nuclear bomb dressed as a clown and somehow make people buy into it!” Whatever your opinion on the man and the tenure, you have to salute the gumption. Live and Let Die (1973) • The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) • The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) • Moonraker (1979) • For Your Eyes Only (1981) • Octopussy (1983) • A View to a Kill (1985) The Living Daylights : Here Bond’s mission is to facilitate the escape of a spy from East Berlin to West Berlin by taking care of a KGB sniper. In this story, the famous 007 would actually express his distaste at having to kill someone. The story would be part of the beginning scene in the movie adaption featuring Timothy Dalton as Bond.

What to know

Some time later, with the plan foiled, Khan has returned to his palace and prepares to flee. Bond and Octopussy also return separately to India. Bond arrives at Khan's palace just as Octopussy and her troops launch an assault on the grounds. In the first story, Bond is investigating an an irregularity involving Major Dexter Smythe, who lives in Jamaica and toys with a local octopus, he calls “Pussy”. 15 years earlier, at the end of the war, Smythe was a member of a unit gathering up stray Nazis. Bond has arrived to ask him what he recalls about one particular event. Bond is acting as a cop or someone in internal affairs in this story. He is not a spy. In 1959, Fleming was commissioned by The Sunday Times to write a series of articles based on world cities, material for which later was collected into a book entitled Thrilling Cities; while travelling through New York for material, Fleming wrote "007 in New York" from Bond's point of view. [23] "007 in New York" was originally titled "Reflections in a Carey Cadillac" [11] and it contains a recipe for scrambled eggs, which came from May Maxwell, [11] the housekeeper to friend Ivar Bryce, who gave her name to Bond's own housekeeper, May. [14] The story was first published in the New York Herald Tribune in October 1963 as "Agent 007 in New York", but was subsequently renamed as "007 in New York" for the 1964 US editions of Thrilling Cities.
