When we think of Old Hollywood there are a few performers that come to mind and Fred Astaire is certainly one of them. Fred Astaire starred alongside some of the biggest actors and actress in Hollywood throughout his film career. Fred Astaire was a brilliant choreographer and is credited for ten of his movies including Top Hat and Funny Face. His tv variety show An Evening with Fred Astaire won an incredible nine Emmy awards. Steve McQueen was known as the real cool dude of Old Hollywood. His performances in action and western movies were widely acclaimed such as The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape. Although Steve McQueen had many memorable movies he earned only one Oscar nomination in his career for his performance in Sand Pebbles. McQueen was one of the most popular actors during his time and is still remembered today as one of Old Hollywood’s most captivating performers. With lead roles in teen romance Everything, Everything and the socially minded YA adaptation The Hate U Give, Stenberg parlayed her prominence into activism via online platforms. Coming out as queer on Teen Vogue's Snapchat in 2016, the actor, who stars in Damien Chazelle's Netflix series The Eddy, uses social media to spotlight the POC LGBTQ community. LGBTQ STORY I'D LOVE TO SEE ONSCREEN"Less weepy queers, more intrepid queers! Nothing wrong with being weepy, I'd just like to see a wider gamut." I FIRST FELT REPRESENTED WHEN I SAW " Flower Drum Song, a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical from 1961, on TV. Oh my God, it was the only time in my life I'd seen an all-Asian cast — happy, singing and dancing."

I FIRST FELT REPRESENTED WHEN I SAW"In 1987, I was about 18 and very much not out, living at home in Yorkshire before moving to London. My family were away on holiday, so I had the house to myself. On TV, Channel 4 had a season of late night queer programming and were screening Parting Glances. I stayed up until 12 a.m. to watch it. For the first time I saw representations of everyday queer lives in a way that felt like I might be able to lead a fulfilling life with the person I loved without hiding or being ashamed. I could have a job, friends, a life. It was revelatory." I FELT MOST PROUD TO BE PART OF THE COMMUNITY LAST YEAR WHEN"I interviewed Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union on my show and they talked about their love for their daughter." Although not many of us grew up in this era, it is a time in history that is still honoured today. The legends of Old Hollywood will live on forever with their names on the Hollywood walk of fame, their faces on our screens and their memories embedded in our minds. The Old Hollywood sign was originally Hollywoodland History of Old Hollywood LGBTQ STORY I'D LOVE TO SEE ONSCREEN"All of them. Romeo choosing Mercutio. Juliet and the Nurse. West Side Story with the Jets and the Sharks at it like knives. Batman on Superman. Gay it all up! Everything!"

THE PERSON I THINK DOESN'T GET ENOUGH CREDIT FOR THEIR ACTIVISM"Alexandra Billings. I've been making art with her for decades, and she is always raising the voices of the people in the room around her through her art, teaching and advocacy." Movies : Gilda, Cover Girl, Pal Joey, The Lady From Shanghai, Separate Tables, Only Angels Have Wings I FIRST FELT REPRESENTED WHEN I SAW"I didn’t realize at the time but probably the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. It was a huge hit in Australia. Every morning when I put on my cologne, I’d ‘spray, delay and walk away.'"Maureen O’Hara is an Irish-American Actress who began her acting career at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. Maureen O’Hara was known for playing strong-minded women on the big screen and performed in many western and action movies, performing her own stunts. Maureen O’Hara had great on-screen chemistry with John Wayne and starred alongside him in five films throughout her career. I'LL FEEL GOOD ABOUT HOLLYWOOD'S LGBTQ REPRESENTATION WHEN"I'm constantly torn between wanting us to be normal and mainstream and ingratiated into regular Hollywood and wanting us to burn the whole system down." Old Hollywood trio, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor and Gene Kelly had excellent onscreen chemistry Books : “My Autobiography” by Charles Chaplin, “Chaplin: His Life And Art” by David Robinson, “Charlie Chaplin’s Own Story” by Charles Chaplin Laurence Olivier

The Old Hollywood era is understood to be the time when Hollywood dominated the film industry. Hollywood was the American dream for actors and actresses who hoped to make it onto the big screen. Old Hollywood is considered one of the most successful eras of filmmaking, with endless classics produced during this time. Sound films brought stardom to Hollywood. I FELT MOST PROUD TO BE PART OF THE COMMUNITY LAST YEAR WHEN"I was riding down Fifth Avenue on the Bravo float at World Pride."I FIRST FELT REPRESENTED WHEN I SAW "Celie in The Color Purple. Watching Whoopi Goldberg kiss Margaret Avery was a life-changing moment for me." Books : “Home: A Memoir of My Early Years” by Julie Andrews, “Home Work: A Memoir of My Hollywood Years” by Julie Andrews, “Julie Andrews” by Richard Stirling Angela Lansbury The Australian comedian, writer and actor has garnered praise for his unabashed depictions of LGBTQ characters in his shows: breakout series Please Like Meand, most recently, Freeform comedy Everything's Gonna Be Okay. The creator has fought to authentically portray everything from messy coming out stories to anal sex. Shirley Temple was an incredible tap dancer, singer and performer and was one of Old Hollywood’s greatest child stars

The beginning of the Old Hollywood era is marked by the introduction of sound films. Changing from silent films to “the talkies” was a changing point in Hollywood and with it came a rise to global cinema. In 1927, “The Jazz Singer” was the first film to use synchronized dialogue and it marked the beginning of the end for silent films. The Academy Awards also began that same year and Warner Bros. received an Honorary Award for their pioneering on “The Jazz Singer”. The movie was not nominated as Best Picture as it was deemed unfair to put a “talkie” up against silent movies. I FIRST FELT REPRESENTED WHEN I SAW"My character Lionel in Dear White People. I literally couldn't find myself in the culture." I FELT MOST PROUD TO BE PART OF THE COMMUNITY LAST YEAR WHEN"Watching the success of Lil Nas X, which has been thrilling. And watching how Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have showed the world how to love and celebrate a gender-nonconforming child. That's really what it's all about." THE PERSON I THINK DOESN'T GET ENOUGH CREDIT FOR THEIR ACTIVISM"Although he has certainly been recognized for it, I don’t think you can overstate how much Ryan Murphy has done to create aspirational LGBTQ characters and to cast and hire LGBTQ people." Books : “Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland” by Gerald Clarke, “Judy Garland on Judy Garland: Interviews and Encounters” by Randy L Schmidt Olivia de HavillandBooks : “Doris Day: Her Own Story” by A. E. MY MENTOR IS"My former boss Stephen Friedman, who gave me my first shot as a freelancer at MTV — I’ve never worked so hard to get a job and never learned so much from one person." It has been 60 years since the Golden Age of Hollywood, yet we are still trying to copy and recreate that stunning Hollywood glamour that encompassed Old Hollywood. Old Hollywood Glamour was elegance, sophistication and style. The biggest Hollywood stars were always dressed up to the nines and their casual wear would be nowhere near what we would consider casual today. Make-up, hair and clothes were always perfect and stars had their own unique looks which portrayed their personalities. Bing Crosby is one of the most successful recording artists of all time and like Frank Sinatra he too made an equally successful and respected career as both a singer and an actor. From 1944-1948, Crosby was Old Hollywood’s top box-office star. Throughout his acting career Bing Crosby starred, co-starred, narrated or had a cameo appearance in a total of 104 films. His career spans for nearly five decades and he was one of the first multi-media stars in Hollywood.
