About this deal

Seznec, Jean (1940). La Survivance des dieux antiques[ Survival of the Pagan Gods]. Bollingen Series. Translated by Sessions, Barbara. Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University Press (published 1972). pp.221–222.

Demogorgon was inspired by a being of that name appearing in popular occult mythology. D&D creator Gary Gygax described his inspirations in an ENWorld forum thread: [13] "Demogorgon is mentioned in various occult books, demonologies list him." On Nightal 15, 1486 DR, [44] Archmage Gromph Baenre weakened the barriers of faerzress, inadvertently "summoning" Demogorgon and allowing him to pass from the Abyss to the Prime Material Plane. He arrived at the tower of Sorcere in Menzoberranzan and cut a swath of destruction as he exited the cavern. [43] Gromph was able to weaken the faerzress because of his study of psionics and the psychic conveyance of a plan devised by the goddess Lolth. [45] He has recently been reworked as part of the new Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse sourcebook, which streamlines some of his abilities and actually makes him less of a melee-range brute than you’d expect.Interdimensional Travel: The Demogorgon was able to move between dimensions. It repeatedly entered Hawkins by creating temporary tears in space-time. It could pull individuals, such as Will Byers and Barbara Holland, through these temporary gates and into the Upside Down. Will eventually succumbed to exhaustion, lying in his makeshift fort. The Demogorgon found him, breaking through the fort wall and taking him to the Upside Down library. Eleven first observed the Demogorgon hunkered over large, yellow eggs feeding off them. It’s not clear whether or not these were the creature’s offspring, or if they were even the same species.

In a more recent D&D book, Out of the Abyss, the monster is defined as “the embodiment of chaos, confusion, and destruction,” which if you ask me, fits the description for the monster from Stranger Things pretty perfectly. Following on from the success of Stranger Things, Wizard’s of the Coast released an official campaign for the same campaign run by Mike in Stranger Things Season 1. It includes Demogorgon as an enemy and a model. The earliest known reference to the name Demogorgon appears in a popular Latin commentary (dated around 350-400 AD) of the ancient epic Roman poem Thebaid (published around 92 AD). [15] The name "Demogorgon" is speculated by scholars to be a misspelling of the Greek "dēmiourgon", meaning "demiurge", introduced by later transcriptions. It's a mistake to rely too heavily on Demogorgon's Gaze in combat. It's an effective way to disrupt a party, but not to kill one. Demogorgon has to trade out significant damage to stun or confuse a character. The Hypnotic Gaze is far and away the most powerful, as it can force D&D characters to damage their allies and waste their most expensive resources in one go. R.A. Salvatore (September 2015). Archmage (Hardcover). ( Wizards of the Coast), pp. 350–351. ISBN 0-7869-6575-4.

In Seasons 1 and 2 of Netflix's Stranger Things, the residents of Hawkins, Indiana are terrorized by a strange creature known as "The Demogorgon". The kids at the forefront of the show may have repurposed the name, inspired by the monster from their D&D campaign. As D&D players are well aware, the Stranger Things version of Demogorgon varies not insignificantly from the in-game version, but still... we're just glad to see this two-headed demon lord name-dropped so openly! The Demogorgon is the first character in Stranger Things to be named after a character from D&D, which was followed by the Mind Flayer and Vecna. If the target fails the save, the target suffers ones of the following effects of Demogorgon’s choice or at random:
