Hon. Sir Gordon William Nottage Palmer was born on 18 July 1918. 1 He was the son of Ernest Cecil Nottage Palmer, 2nd Baron Palmer and Marguerite Osborne. 1 He married Lorna Eveline Hope Bailie, daughter of Major Charles William Hugh Bailie and Nancy Laura Hargreaves Ferrar, on 6 May 1950. 1 He died on 3 July 1989 at age 70. 1 On 7 May 1977, at Haileybury, Hertfordshire, Palmer married firstly Cornelia Dorothy Katharine Wadham, daughter of R. N. Wadham, of Newmarket, Suffolk. They were divorced in 2004. Together they had three children; two sons and a daughter: [4]The title of Baron Palmer was created in 1933 for Sir Ernest Palmer, a reward for his services to music. It passed in 1948 to his son Cecil and in 1950 to Raymond, the 3rd Baron Palmer, Adrian’s uncle. The 3rd Lord Palmer had three daughters, one of whom died in infancy, but no male heir. Thus on his death in 1990 it passed to Adrian, who escaped the worst rigours of inheritance tax by agreeing to open up Manderston to the public. For the English Stage Company at the Royal Court he was directed by Max Stafford-Clark in Falkland Sound/Voces de Malvinas, as Lieutenant David Tinker RN (with Paul Jesson, Lesley Manville and Marion Bailey), as Captain Plume in George Farquhar's The Recruiting Officer, as Lt. Ralph Clark in Timberlake Wertenbaker's Our Country's Good and as Jake in Caryl Churchill's Serious Money (with Linda Bassett, Lesley Manville, Alfred Molina, Gary Oldman and Meera Syal). Poems 62, 67, and other Catullian dialogues’, in D. Kiss (ed.), What Catullus wrote: problems in textual criticism, editing and the manuscript tradition (Swansea, 2015), 129-55 This policy did not always win approval in Scotland. Palmer rented parts of Manderston’s interior to be used as Highgrove and Kensington Palace in an American CBS film about the marriage of the then Prince Charles and Princess Diana during her affair with Major James Hewitt. Such a display of Lèse-majesté resulted in 1966 Palmer being expelled from the Royal Company of Archers, the sovereign’s bodyguard in Scotland.
