About this deal

Plus, I’ll explain some of the terminology that can help you decipher the names of the lenses in Fuji’s X Series (LM, OIS, R, WR, say what?) so you can more easily assess lenses in the future. Another benefit of Fujifilm releasing lenses such as the XF 23mm F/2 is that consumers are offered more choice. More substantial and older lenses of similar focal distance are far more expensive and have slower autofocus. There’s no doubt in my mind that this is an excellent lens for street photography. It produces beautiful images and has industry leading autofocus speed. If you’re a Fuji X shooter and are looking for a 35mm full frame equivalent lens then this is the one to get. I personally loved using this lens for the past few years, primarily because it is so light and compact, with a very flexible focal length and an aperture just wide enough that I can still use it in a lot of low-light situations. The Fuji 23mm f2 lens uses a modern lens design wtih 10 elements in 6 groups including 2 aspherical elements for edge to edge sharpness. The aspherical elements are also part of the focusing group to minimize performance fluctuations between different focusing distances. The lens is sharp with excellent color contrast under most conditions but sharpness isn’t the only thing to consider.

At the 23mm focal length, the angle of view is 63.4 degrees, to give a 35mm equivalent length of 35mm. The Fujifilm XF 23mm F/2 is one of four newer lenses that Fujifilm have produced. The remaining three include the Fujifilm XF 50mm F/2, Fujifilm XF 35mm F/2, and the Fujifilm XF16 mm F/2.8.

Holding it in your hand feels like cradling a baby dragon egg — it’s small but dense. You can tell this lens is made like a tiny tank, completely from metal and ready to withstand getting banged up a little bit. All of these lenses have a similar design and compact size. All have snappy autofocus, and they are all excellent value for money.

Here are a few sample photos with the Fuji 23mm f2 from my travels. Photo taken with the Fuji 23mm f2 in Bavaria, Germany. Photo taken with the Fuji 23mm f2 in Atrani, Italy. Photo taken with the Fuji 23mm f2 in Berlin, Germany. The Fuji 23mm f2 features an all metal construction that is light weight and solid feeling in hand. It just feels well made. The f2 shines the best when shooting from a distance, which allows photographers to get stunning street pics and dynamic travel images without needing to get too close. So you won’t have to explain to passers-by why you’re standing so close to them while trying to snap a picture of your new favourite coffee house. That’s in no small part due to the fact that I adore the look of its bokeh. It’s got some of the most beautiful bokeh of any lens, mirrorless or not. I always joke you could take a picture of trash on the sidewalk and the 35mm f1.4 would make it look like a piece of art.Shallow depth-of-field effects are accentuated at close range so for my next test I shot beer bottles (at Brighton’s Bison Beer shop), close to the minimum focusing distance of the older XF 23mm f1.4; I then roughly matched the subject size with the newer XF 23mm f2 and again shot with both lenses at their maximum apertures. The XF 23mm 1.4 R weighs 10.58 oz / 300 g, so the weight saving is not huge when compared to the 6.35 oz / 180 g for the XF 23mm f/2 R WR. Do you have a big budget, and you want a wide angle lens with beautiful bokeh, and you don’t care about weather-resistance or weight? Get the 23mm f1.4. Above is another more literal example showing the impact of their closest focusing distance where I shot a ruler as close as possible with each lens. Above left, the XF 23mm f2 is reproducing a subject width of 140mm across the frame, compared to 206mm for the XF 23mm f1.4 above right. It’s not a huge difference, but the closer focusing distance of the newer XF 23mm f2 will certainly allow you to reproduce smaller subjects larger on the frame. This would at first suggest it’ll be preferable to product and food photographers, but the relatively soft output at close range would have me choosing an alternative option – the newer XF 23mm f2 is happier with subjects at least 1m away, and best of all on the other side of a street.
